ABOUT KNOLLS CENTER FOR CHANGE

Located in Peoria, Ill., the Knolls Center for Change is a men-only residential substance misuse treatment center operated by behavioral health agency Human Service Center (HSC). Clients at the Knolls Center have access to HSC's full continuum of treatment, including mental health treatment, medication-assisted therapy (MAT), and medically monitored detox. After completing treatment at the Knolls Center, continuing care is offered through HSC's many outpatient programs.

HSC offers similar services at the women-only residential facility, New Leaf Lodge & Retreat. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 41.1 percent of rehab facilities in Illinois offer men-only programming and 29.3 offer women-only programming.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to HSC’s website, the Knolls Center offers individualized services based on assessment, exploration of the individual's community support system, and their motivation to change. Men enrolled in residential treatment progress through a phase-like process in which they learn to develop positive behaviors and build a system of recovery supports.

HSC provides two medication-assisted outpatient programs for clients with opiate dependence: the Outpatient Methadone program, which includes case management services and requires participation in both group and individual sessions, and the Outpatient Suboxone program, which, in addition to group and individual sessions, provides physician consultation and regular medication evaluations with a nurse. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 66 rehab facilities (10.4 percent) in Illinois offer treatment with methadone and 128 (20.2 percent) offer treatment with Suboxone.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, HSC employs approximately 275 professionals, including psychiatrists, physicians, counselors trained in the fields of mental health, drug misuse, and alcoholism, and administrative and support staff. The nine individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date overall appreciated the staff's aptitude.

Staff Experience and Training: 3.9/5

HSC facilities are accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed by the Illinois Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 23.5 percent of rehab facilities in Illinois are accredited by the Joint Commission.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the organization regarding its living arrangements and related offerings; however, individuals polled by Rehabs.com gave high ratings to most relevant metrics, including exercise and leisure options and the cleanliness of facilities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Reviews from five alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date were mixed. Though the alumni tended to give high ratings to the facility's cleanliness and overall accommodations and amenities, they mostly disagreed upon the treatment effectiveness and the staff's experience and training.

Nick, for example, wrote in a representative positive review, “The counselors here are the best and always strive for complete care! Great counseling, subjects and classes.” Alan, conversely, described the facility as “dysfunctional” and the counselors as “terrible.” “The only thing that saved me was the AA meetings,” he noted.

Reviews on secondary review sites were far more positive overall. Three alumni on Google each gave either four- or five-star reviews.[1] On the center's unofficial Facebook page, three alumni each gave five-star reviews.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Reviews from eight loved ones were also mixed. The center's strengths, most loved ones agreed, were family participation, exercise and leisure options, and the connectivity/visitor policies.

One recurring issue reported by several reviewers was a lack of follow up and general long-term ineffectiveness of the program. “He went into treatment and came out better, however, it didn't last. Wish follow up was better and more family involvement,” one anonymous loved one wrote in a representative review.

Family Participation: 4.2/5
Connectivity & Visitor Policy: 4/5

WHAT STAFF SAY

The lone staff member polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a positive review. In particular, the anonymous employee praised the experience of the staff. "The instructions were mainly recovering alcohol/drug addicts which meant they had a better understanding of what the clients were going through," they wrote. However, they also noted that there was a "Lack of extra curricular activities for in-patient clients."

FINANCING

According to its website, HSC receives funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services. Treatment is also covered by most private insurance policies as well as Medicaid and Medicare. Overall, the individuals polled on the matter appreciated the cost of the facility.

The group meetings were good. The counselors were very nice and helped my cousin a lot. He was very apprehensive at first but it turned out very well for his time there.

Helping with addiction but needs more family involvement. It was for my brother who is and currently addicted to drugs. He went into treatment and came out better, however, it didn't last. Wish follow up was better and more family involvement.

the support groups seems like once they leave they fall right back into their old ways, treatment needs to be longer.

Very effective and efficient but faculty wasn't as compassionate/helping as we would have liked. Several request were made to help the patient become healthy in a shorter amount of time but none were given which prolonged the process

They tried to pick people's sponsors, it was a very dysfunctional place. The only thing that saved me was the AA meetings. The counselors were terrible.

I didn't care for loved one being an outpatient---just didn't work. Only should be in patient care. They have the best intentions of getting patients sober. The cost was very high.

I believe it's a good facility, they need to see through cons that go in there! The patient has them completely fooled.

I love it. I'm currently here at The Knolls. I feel safe. The counselors here are the best and always strive for complete care! Great counseling, subjects and classes. However, there is no WiFi and you can't bring in your own soda.
