ABOUT KOLMAC CLINIC – COLUMBIA
Located in the community of Columbia, Md., 20 miles southwest of Baltimore, Kolmac Clinic provides outpatient-based treatment, detoxification, and aftercare services for adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. This location is one of six facilities of the organization, which serves Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia. Clients must be at least 19 years of age to receive treatment.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, clients are assessed to determine if detoxification is necessary. If it is, clients can stay at the clinic for up to 10 hours a day, especially in the beginning. Also, to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, Kolmac Clinic may utilize buprenorphine and naltrexone for opioid dependency.
Kolmac Clinic’s outpatient rehabilitation program involves three group sessions per day, each lasting three hours with a break in between groups. Clients often begin with five sessions a week and slowly decrease as they progress through the eight-week treatment program. Treatment utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in group counseling sessions, which commonly discuss issues related to relapse prevention. Clients with co-occurring psychiatric disorders also receive medication management, which is monitored by a licensed psychiatrist.
After completing the outpatient program, clients can participate in continuing care, which promotes sustained sobriety through weekly, two-hour group sessions. Clients are also highly encouraged to participate in a 12-step program, though it is not mandatory. There are also weekly SMART support groups for friends and family members.
A CARF-accredited facility, Kolmac Clinic of Columbia is led by a team of medical doctors, psychiatrists, and licensed professional counselors. It employs a multidisciplinary team of master’s level substance abuse counselors, mental health therapists, psychiatric nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The only review submitted to Rehabs.com from an alum came from S.D., who provided a rating of five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness. “I was admitted in January 2012 and I have been sober since. I was impressed with how helpful and professional the staff was,” the alum commented.
Elsewhere online to date, reviews are mixed. Six reviewers left ratings on Google that average 2.2 out of five stars. Gary wrote of unsupportive staff who turned him away after a relapse. “This is supposed to be a treatment facility where the staff supports and helps you change, not one that neglects you when you relapse,” he wrote, and added, “I was very disappointed in the way I was treated.” Another alum, Stacie, felt staff were not flexible in scheduling continuing care. On the other hand, Mark gave five stars and wrote: "The care at Kolmac is real and the staff is thoroughly professional."
Additional reviews appeared on Yelp to date where 17 ratings averaged 3.4 out of five stars. Feedback was similarly as mixed, though most gave favorable reviews. Chuck gave a perfect rating and, in a representational review, wrote: "I'd have to say they likely saved my life. I never had any issue with staff there, they all seem dedicated and well-trained, but it is their job to redirect you..and some people resent that (like I did)." Further, reviewer T.S. gave two stars and noted that it was easy to lie about drug use to counselors.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Reviews from friends and family were also limited, but supported the opinions of alumni. An anonymous family member offered high four- and five-star ratings for family participation, counselor experience, and holistic options. The loved one recommended the program wholeheartedly, although they identified the program’s cost as a weakness and rated the counseling options only two out of five stars. “They have amazing people. The cost could be a bit lower. The rehab was wonderful for my family,” they remarked.
The Kolmac Clinic of Columbia accepts a range of private insurance plans to help cover the cost of treatment, including Aetna, Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, and more. According to the facility’s website, the current cost of treatment is $140 for the initial clinical evaluation, $475 per day for detoxification, and $210 per day for rehabilitation sessions. Continuing care services are $140 per session.
