ABOUT KOLMAC OUTPATIENT RECOVERY CENTER – TOWSON
Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Center operates six alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers across Northern Virginia and Maryland in Baltimore, Columbia, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, and Washington, D.C. The Towson, Md. location, on the campus of Sheppard Pratt Hospital, provides outpatient-based treatment and detox for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurrring conditions.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, clients undergo an initial assessment. If necessary, ambulatory detoxification is available on-site. Kolmac utilizes buprenorphine and naltrexone for those experiencing opioid dependence. In Maryland, 157 facilities in the state offer treatment with buprenorphine to minimize the discomfort of opioid withdrawal.
The Towson location offers two intensive outpatient programs (IOP) during the day and three outpatient programs during the evenings. Over the course of treatment, clients will participate in 20 to 30 sessions that incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group counseling sessions, and medication management for those with co-occurring conditions. Kolmac is also one of 40 facilities in Maryland that offers acupuncture treatment.
The center's relapse prevention group focuses on preventing and coping with triggers during sobriety. Continuing care groups for men and young adults are also offered, as well as a bi-monthly meeting for clients who have completed 70 sessions is available. To involve loved ones in recovery, weekly support meetings are also offered to family members. Throughout programming, Kolmac encourages clients to take part in 12-step meetings and hosts weekly SMART Recovery meetings on-site.
Kolmac of Towson is run by a program manager with 16 years of experience in substance abuse treatment, and employs master’s-level addiction counselors, mental health therapists, psychiatric nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Kolmac is part of the 32.6 percent of facilities in the state to be CARF-accredited.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The sole alum who responded to the Rehabs.com survey to date gave a mostly positive review of the facility, offering four- and five-star ratings for the facility's counseling options, as well as its faith-based and 12-step components of programming. Although offering more moderate three-star ratings for family involvement and holistic offerings, the alum, L.S.C. wrote: “Very helpful. Highly recommend continuing care. Been clean over 3 years now.”
Third-party sites reveal mixed opinions. On Google, the Towson location received an average of four out of five stars from five reviewers. "They also do a decent job helping the family cope with your behaviors and getting them to understand that your addiction is not their fault," William wrote in a representative review. Not all reviewers agreed however. In a two-star review, G.M. wrote "Kolmac is a poor excuse for an addition treatment center. They care little about their patients and will discharge them for relapsing without any concern for their welfare."
On Yelp, two reviewers gave conflicting opinions, with one rating the facility one star and the other a perfect five stars. The one-star reviewer complained about the staff, writing "This is supposed to be a treatment facility where the staff supports and helps you change, not one that neglects you when you relapse. I was very disappointed in the way I was treated..."
According to the facility’s website, the current cost of treatment is $140 for the initial clinical evaluation, $475 per day for detoxification services, $210 per day for rehabilitation sessions, and $140 per day for continuing care. Kolmac Clinic of Towson accepts a range of private insurance plans to help cover the costs of treatment, including Aetna, Cigna, Magellan, and ValueOptions.
