Kootenai Health is a community-owned hospital in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The hospital offers both inpatient and outpatient services through its behavioral health department, helping adult men and women struggling with co-occurring disorders develop the skills needed “to lead happy and healthy lives.”

Clients meet with an intake team for a comprehensive medical history upon admission into Kootenai Health.

Individuals in need of a high level of structure and intensive treatment are typically referred to Kootenai Health’s inpatient program, one of just three (2.4 percent of) hospital-based inpatient programs in the state of Idaho. During this 21-day program, inpatients follow a scheduled curriculum of individual, group, and family therapy in addition to educational workshops designed to address the disease of addiction. Treatment also addresses relapse prevention, spirituality, and recreation.

Those seeking intensive treatment on an outpatient basis may be recommended for the intensive outpatient program (IOP). Available as either a stand-alone or step-down service, the IOP provides clients with a comprehensive assessment and opportunities to develop personal treatment goals with the support of master’s level clinicians. IOP participants delve into 12-step work and attend both co-ed and gender-specific process groups three nights a week.

According to Kootenai Health’s website, the treatment team includes a psychiatrist, registered nurse, master’s level therapists, and certified chemical dependency counselors.

The 16-bed chemical dependency inpatient unit is housed in a clinical, no-frills environment. Inpatients of the 21-bed program reside in sparsely furnished shared bedrooms. The unit also has a communal dining area and outdoor patio.

The five alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date shared details of mostly positive treatment experiences with Kootenai Health. Most indicated that they’d recommend the facility to others, providing four or five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness.

Several respondents highlighted the amount of personalized attention available from a compassionate staff. “It's a facility that allows about 15 patients at a time,” noted Belinda. “It allowed for more individualized treatment.” As a group, alumni told of “extremely caring and complete care” and a “very supportive” staff. “It's been the third treatment center I've been to and I now understand my disease clearly,” added R.K.

Complaints were scarce: one alum succinctly labeled the food as “bad,” however, the four others each gave five out of five stars for the hospital's quality of meals.

Kootenai Health accepts most commercial insurance plans - making it one of just 92 (74.2 percent of) centers in the state of Idaho to do so - and Medicare and Medicaid. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify.

Went into emergency, treated, triaged, admitted and spent little over 24 hours....fantastic in every respect, including staff, care, food, etc. Don't want a repeat, but the hospital did a great job and provided excellent care and service
