Lokahi Treatment Centers (LTC) is a nonprofit that operates six treatment facilities across Hawaii. The facilities are located in Hilo, Honoka’a, Kailua Kona, Kohala, Pahoa, and Waikoloa. The Hilo facility, located on the Big Island, provides outpatient treatment programs for adults and adolescents seeking treatment for Substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The Hilo location also offers anger management and domestic violence intervention (DVI) programs.

Before participating in Lokahi Treatment Centers’ (LTC) treatment programs, clients undergo an initial substance abuse and psychiatric assessment. If applicable, LTC also conducts anger management and DVI assessments. Clients are referred to the individual treatment programs needed to address each client’s issues.

Treatment focuses on establishing an environment based on harmony, balance, personal responsibility, individual dignity, and self-esteem. Each client receives individual attention while also attending group sessions. Clients work with counselors to identify and address problem behaviors that contribute to addiction. Adult group sessions are gender-specific, but adolescent groups are co-ed. Medication management is also available as needed.

Clients participate in topic-specific group activities as well to learn more about each topic and to develop coping skills. These topics include anger management and domestic violence prevention. Clients can participate in multiple groups based on their individual assessment.

Assessments and evaluations are available for clients to identify their specific conditions. Recommendations and referrals to other facilities with specialized treatment programs are available when needed.

Family involvement is strongly encouraged throughout the treatment process. Family and couples counseling is available as needed to maintain family connections and support networks.

CARF-accredited, Lokahi Treatment Centers employs a team of accredited substance abuse counselors and a program medical director, Lokahi House is supervised by an on-site manager, and the organization offers internships and volunteer opportunities.

To date, the one alum who was polled by Rehabs.com had a positive experience at the Lokahi Treatment Center in Hilo. They gave the center four out of five stars when asked if they would recommend the center, and five stars for treatment effectiveness.

The alum gave four out of five stars for accommodations, meals, connectivity/visitation policies, facility cleanliness, and family participation throughout treatment programming. The alum gave only three out of five stars to exercise and leisure provisions and holistic treatment offerings. When asked what were the center’s strengths, however, the alum wrote: “everything.”

On Google, a single anonymous alumni gave the facility one out of five stars and wrote: “This place sucks. Staff are the lowest.” [1]

At the time of this writing, the two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com provided mixed opinions of the program. One loved one gave the center five out of five stars when asked if they would recommend the Hilo facility, while the other gave two out of five stars.

While one alum gave the center five stars when asked about the staff’s experience and training, the other gave only two stars. “They employ Counselors with experience in the field,” loved one P.K. wrote. “They have a clinical supervisor that spends time with his employees.”

However, the other loved one rated the center’s counseling options the worst with one star. “Lokahi drug and alcohol rehabilitation out patient services to no segreate different types of addiction,” they wrote.

According to the facility’s website, Lokahi Treatment Centers accepts most medical insurance plans, although it does not specify if public insurance is accepted.

There are some helpful counseling sessions. Other participants are there because of mandatory prison orders and are a threat to the health and safety of others. Lokahi drug and alcohol rehabilitation out patient services do not segregate different types of addiction. Participants are encouraged to talk any way they want to other participants. The sessions concerning social events like pot luck are not mandatory and therefore those suffering from social interaction problems will not have those counseling sessions.

This program works with the clients referral and Drug Court program. Our town is small and you can count all facilities on one hand. Strengths: They employ Counselors with experience in the field. They have a clinical supervisor that spends time with his employees. There are incentives available to the employees. Besides substance/alcohol abuse they provide Co-occurring and DVI classes. Weaknesses: Time between a relapse discharge to continued care.
