Louisiana State University’s Department of Psychiatry provides inpatient and outpatient treatment for persons struggling with mental health issues or co-occurring disorders in Shreveport, La. The facility offers psychiatric stabilization and extended-stay inpatient care. LSU sees roughly 15,000 patients annually, and operates across the E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe and Huey P. Long Medical Center in Pineville.

Patients at LSU undergo an initial psychiatric assessment to determine the best course of treatment. If an individual requires psychiatric stabilization, they may be referred to the hospital’s 15-bed Psychiatric Crisis Unit, which runs a diagnosis and crisis management services. The facility’s primary psychiatric treatment consists of pharmacological intervention combined with therapeutic counseling. Patients with a primary substance abuse disorder are offered addiction education and may be referred to a specialty treatment facility for further treatment.

LSU’s Faculty Clinic offers adult psychiatric care to private patients. Its Resident Training Clinic, which is staffed by attending psychiatrists, residents, and medical students, provides care for non-insured, Medicaid and Medicare patients by appointment, with a physician referral.

While in inpatient care, patients attend group counseling sessions on a range of topics such as anger management, coping techniques, and emotional regulation. Once a patient is stabilized, clinicians create a comprehensive discharge plan, which may include treatment referrals to the facility’s outpatient program or they may be placed in the extended-care program to continue inpatient treatment. The length of inpatient care is determined by the individual’s clinical needs and overall progress.

In the outpatient program patients may receive individual counseling sessions, psychiatric evaluations, and ongoing medication management. Group therapy is also available in addition local community mental health clinics. To help patients reintegrate back into the community, clinicians provide discharge planning and referrals to community-based programs and social services

LSU is staffed by a team of resident psychiatrists, physicians, psychiatric nurses, mental health counselors, behavioral health technicians and medical students 24/7. Note also that it as it is part of a college campus, it is a learning institution that not only treats patients but also teaches aspiring mental health professionals. It is one of 90 institutions across the state of Louisiana accredited, certified, or licensed to treat substance abuse and mental health disorders.

Although specific information about the facility’s accommodations is sparse, the department reportedly offers a supervised hospital setting, which provides 24-hour patient access to medical and nursing care. The staff at LSU offers treatment at the E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe and Huey P. Long Medical Center in Pineville as well. The 15-bed Psychiatric Crisis Unit has two nursing stations and two resident and student offices, and is monitored at all times. Adult visitation hours are held in the morning and evenings each day, and children can visit on Sundays between 1 and 4 p.m.

The sole alum polled by at the time of this writing gave a mixed review of the facility. The alum offered ratings of four stars for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training, the facility’s cleanliness, and its exercise and leisure activities. However they gave a rating of just two stars for the family participation and holistic offerings. When asked if they would recommend the facility, however, the alum gave a four star rating.

On Google, the ratings were average, with a rating of 3.5 out of five stars from five reviewers.[1] However, it appears that these reviews were for the hospital at-large, rather than the psychiatric care.

The two loved ones polled by to date were generally positive. Both offered high marks of four and five stars for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training and the amount of family participation. Both loved ones gave perfect five out of five-star ratings for their likelihood of recommending the facility to others. The one negative both reviewers cited was an overworked staff. One anonymous loved one call the staff “overwhelmed,” while the other said there was not enough staff.

While there is no information provided on the facility’s website regarding pricing, LSU’s Department of Psychiatry accepts a range of private insurance plans, Medicaid (accepted at 26 percent of Lousiana facilities), and Medicare (accepted at 62 percent of Louisiana facilities). According to the facility’s website, an additional $250 fee may be required at each clinic visit for non-Louisiana residents who attend the outpatient facility without insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare.
