A program of RiverMend Health, Malibu Recovery Centers (MBRC) are a group of exclusive drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities located in Southern California. Oceanfront homes, highly trained and compassionate staff, and an integrative approach to evidence-based and holistic treatments support the recovery process for men and women seeking lifelong sobriety. Medically supervised detoxification, residential programming, transitional living, outpatient treatment, and treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders like depression and anxiety are all available through personalized recovery plans.

MBRC combines traditional Western treatment methods with holistic practices of physical fitness, creative arts, and spiritual-based therapies. When clients arrive at one of the facilities, they’ll receive a thorough assessment and work with staff members to create a personalized treatment plan.

Addiction treatment may include a combination of 12-step support meetings, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), yoga, group and individual counseling, and trauma, drama, music, animal-assisted, or art therapies. According to MBRC’s webpage, programs work to “restore brain chemistry” and “rejuvenate the body’s reward system.” Clients meet with their treatment team on a weekly basis to discuss progress made and any adjustments that may be required.

All program options, from residential to partial hospitalization (PHP) to intensive outpatient (IOP), provide a gender-specific environment and daily curriculum of exercise, skills development, counseling, individualized treatment, and education. Family involvement is also highly encouraged.

Another integral component to the MBRC rehabilitation process is its Malibu Recovery Diet, which was developed to raise dopamine levels naturally. Chef-led cooking classes provide professional instruction in nutrition and healthy meal preparation.

In keeping with its treatment approach, the staff is also multidisciplinary. The staff leadership includes a psychiatrist with dozens of affiliations with medical schools, research institutions, and hospitals, clinical psychologists with diverse treatment specializations, nurses, and healthcare administrators. A primary care physician, licensed addiction counselors, yoga instructors, and a professional chef are also on staff.

Accommodations at each of the MBRC locations are comfortable, spacious, and luxurious. Clients stay in private or semi-private rooms, and have access to gyms, recreational grounds, pools, fireplaces, and communal living rooms.

Alumni feedback is mixed. In their survey, an anonymous reviewer urged others to “Please do not go here.” “They will tell you your stay is covered by insurance and then slam you a year later for $5,000 of bills!”

On Yelp, nine reviews provided a mix of personal opinions and experiences. John D. wrote: “I like their multidisciplinary and holistic approach. Very healthy, lots of exercise, and great healthy food."[1] Alum D.S. shared their success story: “I finally got sober at Malibu Beach Recovery Center.” D.S. also noted that MBRC provided her with “the best combination” of yoga, AA meetings and in-house therapists and doctors.

Others expressed dissatisfaction with the balance of traditional therapies offered. Former client Chad, for example, claimed that the program simply had “too much yoga” and a “staff that has no idea about anything” while Michael H. wrote: “you see a therapist ONCE a week and its ALL aa meetings.”

Of the 12 reviewers surveyed by to date, all but one mention compassionate, caring staff and individualized, varied therapies as strengths. Though they considered the facility’s insurance policy a weakness, E.A.D., a loved one, held in high regard MBRC’s gender-responsive treatment and “full continuum of care from detox to sober living.”

Eight staff members wrote to, many of whom emphasized the strong staff-to-client ratio. “The program is set up in a manner that allows the client to use and enhance experiences that may be a part of their own daily routines which makes the program uniquely designed to fit the individual,” wrote Dawn. She also noted that staff members are “a continued source of support even after the client returns home.”

MBRC accepts most PPO health insurance plans.

Strengths: gender-responsive treatment, full continuum of care from detox to sober living. Weaknesses: out of network with insurance takes insurance, very high staff to patient ration, medical care and regular psychiatric sessions

Staff ratio is excellent, provide diverse recovery meeting exposure 12 step, smart recovery and church if and depending on the client's needs and desires. The program is setup in a manner that allows the client to use and enhance experiences that may be part of their own daily routines which makes the program uniquely designed to fit the individual. Staff is very competent and trained in several areas that helps offer diverse approaches to recover and relapse prevention. Once you are a client the door is always open after the client transitions back with their families. Staff are caring and loving. Staff are here to walk the journey with the client and be a continued source of support even after the client returns home.

Compassion, guidance, support, empathy, appreciation, recognition, structure, security, and sympathy were all strengths. Consistency was an issue. This facility Counselors and therapist goals are to assist you with building back your life. The results you will get are the same as the effort you make in all the work you put in. This facility is clean and extremely comfortable with plenty of compassionate people to support you and guide you in making the appropriate choices for moving forward in life.

Trauma Focused treatment was a strength. Along with Gender Specific (all women's treatment facility) Holistice/Integrative Treatment Highly Trained and Experienced Therapist and Staff High ratio between client to staff Individualized care. However, Lack of communication between sites at times was a weakness. This facility offers a holistic/integrative model of treatment for women who have been suffering due to unresolved trauma and other mood disorders, and have used alcohol/drugs to reduce the emotional pain. The facility helps women find their voice and create a life worth living instead of self-imposed suffering. They teach clients about the disease model of addiction, but also how to manage their emotions and make choices that supports their recovery and helps them discover their potential.

Holistic, flexible program, administered by caring, dedicated staff. Chefs provide a diet (Malibu Beach Recovery Diet) that reduces cravings and regulates dopamine. Yoga up to 3 times a day, mindfulness, expressive therapies, multiple modalities, plenty of individual attention. Spacious houses, beautiful views. There are three residential houses, 6 beds each. Some people prefer more company. Staff really make an effort to provide individualized attention to clients and meet clients where they are, rather than approach treatment in a rigid manner. At the same time, staff provides appropriate structure and supports accountability in a respectful way.

EXCELLENT MANAGEMENT TEAM. A FEW EMPLOYEES WITH ENTITLEMENT ISSUES WHO THINK THEY OWN THE COMPANY. Top notch one on one treatment, availability 24/7 for clients, and all staff are involved. Stress free environment on behalf of the client. Communication and a proactive mindset is a positive goal staff continue to promote. Ethics are very strong at this facility, and I appreciate that fact.
