ABOUT THE MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM - FOUNTAIN CENTERS IN ALBERT LEA

Located in Albert Lea, about 90 minutes south of Minneapolis, Minn., the Mayo Clinic Health System’s Fountain Centers is a substance abuse treatment facility that offers a range of services for individuals faced with alcoholism, drug abuse, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Gender-specific inpatient and outpatient programs are available for adults, as well as medically monitored detoxification services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, treatment is based on 12-step principles and strongly encourages participation in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Inpatient programs are gender-specific, and program descriptions published on the website indicate that a traditional 12-step approach is augmented by individual, group, and family therapy, relapse prevention work, and motivational enhancement therapy (MET).

Outside of therapy, clients can expect a variety of recreational activities such as indoor rock climbing, fishing, canoeing, swimming, walking, and bowling. Men and women also attend educational classes that cover key topics such as stress management, healthy living, and triggers and cravings.

There’s also an Extended Care Program for clients with a history of chronic relapse. This extended track lasts from 60 to 90 days, during which time clients stay in a community-based residence.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility’s multidisciplinary treatment team includes medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and licensed alcohol and drug counselors. Staff are available to inpatient clients 24 hours a day.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

While there is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, the six alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date awarded Fountain Centers in Albert Lea an average rating of 4.3 out of five stars for its accommodations and amenities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the six alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, five gave the facility positive-to-mixed reviews, while one gave a very negative review, describing the facility and its staff as “not understanding, but cold and concerned about [their] success rate.”

The other alumni felt told Rehabs.com of an experienced and compassionate staff, and indicated that the program provided solid, effective treatment. “The staff are experienced, and there's a lot of things to go do which helps us develop healthy [habits],” Michael wrote in a representative review. Alum Mitch shared his success story: “6 of my buddies and I attended Fountain Lake over a period of a year. All 7 of us have maintained sobriety for over 33 years with no relapses."

One former client, though satisfied with treatment overall, complained that the facility itself was a bit rundown, while another, in an otherwise positive report, made the claim that treatment plans were not as in depth or focused on underlying issues as they could be.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Loved ones gave the facility mostly mediocre feedback. Six of the nine loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com collectively gave Fountain Centers average ratings of two stars out of five for its holistic offerings, 2.83 stars for its connectivity and visitors policy, 3.83 stars for its affordability, 3.5 stars for its counseling options, and 3.67 stars for its staff’s level of training and experience. Despite these mediocre ratings, one anonymous reviewer told Rehabs.com that their “loved one benefited greatly,” while another called Fountain Center's program "very well-run."

Recurring criticisms included rundown facilities, a lack of holistic options, and a lack of professionalism amongst staff.

FINANCING

According to its website, Fountain Centers accepts commercial insurance, private pay, and the Consolidated Chemical Dependency Treatment Fund (CCDTF), and participates in most southern Minnesota provider networks.

You need to get MORE and BETTER well trained staff on duty at all times. One woman was NOT professional at all.

Since I didn't get the chance to go to family week, I felt that the client (my loved one) didn't completely get through the treatment.

Doctors appointments were a strength of the facility. It is a 30 day program. Most are. My daughter made it for awhile. Programs need to be affordable and definately long term. Or free for who ever needs it.

The staff are experienced, and there's a lot of things to go do which helps us develop healthy Habbits. The treatment plans are weak meaning they aren't in depth, and there is little motivitation to express deep and recurring issues. I went there relapsed for a little over a year, and I'm now three months clean.

Strengths: The people that worked there. Weaknesses: Counselor not understanding completely. Fountain Centers is a great rehab facility. The women's housing was in the old hospital, the area was needing updating, maintenance or tear it down and replace it with a new facility.

Newer building and experienced staff were strengths of the facility. However, it was costly. It was required for my sister due to legal issues.

This facility accepted my brother in time of need. My brother's alcoholism is chronic (30 years, he is 47). This is not is first treatment stay (although is is the first here). We cannot know the effectiveness until some time has passed. Fountain Center seems to have a very well-run program, I know that success now depends on whether he will remain strong enough to fight the addiction long-term. All is good today.

Good group counseling. I did clinicals here, and it was great to speak with the counselors. But a lot of people didn't get full recovery after leaving facility, and came back numerous times, usually because of the court.
