ABOUT MCALISTER INSTITUTE - NORTH COASTAL REGIONAL RECOVERY CENTER

One of California’s largest addiction treatment providers, McAlister Institute operates 25 facilities throughout Napa and San Diego Counties. Located in the beach community of Oceanside, North Coastal Regional Recovery Center (NCRRC) provides outpatient-based programs and services for adults struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders. The 40-year-old agency also offers gender-specific outpatient care at South Bay Women's Recovery Center in National City and adolescent care at North Central Teen Recovery Center in San Diego.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to McAlister Institute’s website, North Coastal Regional Recovery Center provides clients with a wraparound treatment program that addresses their specific needs. To assist clinicians in developing an individualized treatment plan, clients participate in an initial assessment. The assessment also helps to identify any co-occurring mental health conditions that may be contributing to addictive behaviors.

Core programming consists of individual and group counseling sessions. NCRRC’s trauma-informed, evidence-based approach addresses past experiences that may be contributing to irrational thinking patterns and destructive behaviors. Counseling sessions are designed to promote self-awareness and help clients to identify and change these patterns and behaviors.

To assist clients in sustaining sobriety, the outpatient program also focuses on relapse prevention, life skills development, and education. Following a primary treatment plan, aftercare is offered through ongoing recovery support, vocational training, and linkages to community resources.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

CARF-accredited, McAlister Institute's North Coast Regional Recovery Center’s outpatient program is led and facilitated by a team of licensed mental health therapists, alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselors, and case managers. Job descriptions on the agency's website note that employees are culturally competent and bilingual skills are preferred. Ongoing staff training is also a priority. Alumni reviews received by Rehabs.com indicated that some treatment staff are themselves in recovery. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing submitted an average rating of 4.25 out of five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Two of the three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend North Coast Regional Recovery Center to others. The third noted that they learned about the effects of drugs through NCRRC services, but that the facility was understaffed with insufficient counselors to cover educational sessions. They rated the effectiveness of treatment three out of five stars.

The two former clients who awarded five stars for the effectiveness of treatment highlighted counselors as a facility strength. “Very friendly and relatable. They really want to help you,” one wrote.

Similarly, two alumni rated such specific aspects of treatment as counseling options and dual diagnosis treatment highly, while the third selected a moderate three stars. Opinions from the two polled on holistic therapy offerings were both low (with one and two stars), and they were split on family participation. The latter is a service mentioned as available on the facility's website, but not highlighted.

All three agreed that the facility was clean and well maintained.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com agreed that NCRRC treatment was beneficial, provided a rating of five out of five stars for its overall effectiveness. The loved one also offered four-star ratings for both family participation and the facility’s counseling options. “They specialize in skill-building and team based approaches to recovery,” they wrote. Co-occurring treatment capabilities, however, received just two stars.

FINANCING

According to the center’s website, North Coastal Regional Recovery Center provides its services on a sliding fee scale, which is based on income, to ensure treatment is accessible regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. The four survey respondents gave the facility’s affordability an average rating of four out of five stars.

My son was recently at this place. Unfortunately I have very little positive to say about this \"rehab\". There are some lower level staff there that really care and try their best, and to them I am grateful. The manager is a terribly ignorant and rude individual who should not be in the position of working with children, in any capacity. I have nothing positive to say about her... This is basically just a state funded dry out/detox hole for kids coming out of juvenille hall. There is very little treatment, program and no family involvement whatesoever, unless you consider visiting your child \"family involvement\". (And god forbid you work on those visiting days or hours because God knows \"no acceptions will be made\" as per the manager's instruction) The facility is a small 3 bedroom house in Ramona with a kitchen and living room. The office is just a patio addition, so it is not a true facility, in the sense that you may think. There is a lot of sitting around, so make sure your child brings books and school work. They did go and feed the homeless, speak with inmates and attend NA meetings, but those were the highlights. Bottom line, the manager, as dreadful as she is, and this place are very unlikely to help your kid with anything other than 30 day dry out. Again, some staff are great and I would highly recommend they leave and go work somewhere else. Find a real rehab, if that\'s what your child needs. You definitely dont want to send your child here.

They specialize in skill-building and team based approaches to recovery. They do a particularly poor job of monitoring the needs of patients in coed housing.

You learn about health & mental thing that your brain goes through when on drugs. Sometime they are under staff & not enough counselor able to teach the sessions. Well I now have a better insight of what drugs can do to your brain & body.
