ABOUT MEDICAL CITY GREEN OAKS HOSPITAL
A psychiatric hospital with a commitment to help patients regardless of their ability to pay, Medical City Green Oaks Hospital in Dallas, Texas, has provided treatment to adolescents, seniors, and adults struggling with mental health and substance use disorders since 1983. The facility's comprehensive range of services includes inpatient crisis stabilization and short-term care, three levels of outpatient treatment, and telepsychiatry services. The hospital maintains four outpatient locations in the DFW area.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Although the Green Oaks website does not
doesn't mention the availability of detox services, inpatient treatment is designed to assist clients experiencing psychiatric-related crises in a medical setting. A typical stay is one to seven days. The hospital maintains separate units for adult psychiatric and adult substance abuse patients, as well as for adolescents and seniors. Inpatient clients participate in community meetings, therapy groups, recreational therapy, spirituality groups, health literacy education, and reflection groups, with daily Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous groups added to substance abuse patients' schedule.
Outpatient treatment is also designed for short-term care, with individualized plans averaging one to six weeks. Clients who have received a dual diagnosis of psychiatric and addiction conditions can enroll in an intensive day program for integrated treatment.
The main drug and alcohol program offered by Green Oaks is an eight-week track, scheduled evenings and offered out of the hospital's Plano location. This outpatient program serves mostly clients in early stages of recovery and is group-based, incorporating substance abuse education, life skills training, family sessions, and regular drug and alcohol testing. Therapeutic approaches involve 12-step concepts and the core Recovery Principles outlined by the federal government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Some principles include self-direction, peer support, responsibility, and empowerment. Individuals who have completed the program may also participate in once-a-week aftercare groups.
Medical City Green Oaks also provides integrated mental and physical heath care at some of its outpatient locations. Individual counseling may be arranged as needed.
The main substance abuse program's staff includes master's level clinicians. The hospital also employs psychiatrists.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The main Dallas hospital is a lockdown facility and outpatient services are offered at four sites located in Dallas, Plano, and Irving. More than a dozen individuals submitted survey responses to Rehabs.com, revealing general approval for accommodations. Most appear to review inpatient services. The alumni and loved ones polled gave an average rating of 4.3 stars out of five for the facility's cleanliness and maintenance, 3.7 for meals and nutrition, and 3.5 for exercise and leisure activities. Two reviewers identified limited opportunities to get outside for exercise as a weakness.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Three of the four alumni polled by Rehabs.com would recommend the program to others and one would not. Alum R.N. did not find the treatment helpful at any level, while two other alumni rated the effectiveness of treatment a perfect five stars and the third selected three. All three who were asked to rate the staff's level of training and experience also selected five stars, and two rated opportunities for family participation the same. Ratings for holistic offerings were lower, which would fit with the hospital's emphasis on stabilization rather than more extensive, comprehensive treatment. Although one otherwise positive reviewer reported a relapse after treatment, they nevertheless noted the value of access to one-on-one aftercare services.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Reviews from friends and family were also overall positive and tended to agree with alumni feedback. The effectiveness of treatment received the highest average rating of 4.2 stars from 11 reviewers and holistic offerings were rated the lowest. One individual reported problems with the hospital's discharge process, although that process received an average of 4.1 stars from eight reviewers. Family participation also fared well.
Other reviewers mentioned the hospital's helpful insurance policies and the staff's communication and caring. Complaints included a report of under-staffing.
WHAT STAFF SAY
The sole staff member polled by Rehabs.com to date would highly recommend the facility but reported a problem with high staff turnover.
Green Oaks accepts most insurance plans as well as self-pay. For uninsured patients, the hospital offers several forms of financial assistance, including a charity discount policy, an uninsured discount policy, or flexible monthly payments. Some clients are covered by county funds.
