A coordinated partnership between the Oklahoma City Police Department and OKC Metro Alliance, FIRSTEP offers one of the state's 110 (57.6 percent) gender-specific rehabilitation programming as an alternative to incarceration. The facility is one of 39 (20.4 percent) long-term residential treatment programs for men in Oklahoma struggling with chemical dependency. Although FIRSTEP is a treatment facility, the program is focused on work-related recovery. FIRSTEP also offers a women's program.

According to FIRSTEP's website, the organization's goal is to divert clients from incarceration by providing recovery assistance. Based on a work-therapy model, clients do various jobs around their community, including meal preparation, building reconstruction and painting, and others.

The website does not specify other types of treatment offered, though feedback collected by suggested family events and 12-step meetings are available. Clients unable to lift 40 to 50 lbs, diagnosed with severe mental health issues, or charged with violent felonies or sexual offenses are not eligible for the program.

The men's FIRSTEP have program directors, but staff personnel are not listed on the website. Seven individuals polled by to date gave slightly above-average ratings for the quality of staff.

Staff's Level of Training and Experience: 2.9/5 stars
Counseling Options: 2.7/5 stars

According to the center’s website, the center is located on the west side of Lake Stanley Draper in Oklahoma City. FIRSTEP serves up to 70 male clients, which is a large level of availability given that the average number of clients in a residential facility was 18 individuals at one time, as of 2016. Pictures depict clients working outside either painting or constructing houses, and seven survey respondents to date gave accommodations high ratings.

Cleanliness: 3.7/5 stars

Six alumni polled by to date left mixed ratings of FIRSTEP. Four of those alumni rated the facility highest in exercise and leisure options, connectivity and visitor policy, cleanliness, and affordability. They rated it lowest in holistic treatment offerings.

Exercise and Leisure Options: 3.5/5 stars
Holistic Offerings: 2/5 stars

The other two alumni rated the facility highest in its level of staff support at five and four stars, and well enough in exercise options and cleanliness at three and four stars, but lowly in other metrics such as connectivity, holistic treatment offerings, and opportunities for leisure.

In feedback, alumni praised the work therapy model but noted its lack of individual or group therapy options. Alum K.C. wrote, "It's a work facility so we didn't receive alot of one one treatment or much group but it worked for me because I wanted it!" Similarly, T.I. noted, "It was a work based program so you could get put in the world and live sober.treatment is up to the individual trying to gain recovery. If they want it they will learn to gain no matter what their surroundings."

On Google, 14 individuals to date rated the men's FIRSTEP program an average 3.9 out of five stars.[1] Commentary about the program being work-based was prevalent, with some reviewers feeling overworked and some expressing that this helped them gain tools towards sobriety. N.O. representatively wrote, "Awesome place for those who want to change their lives."

On Facebook, where the facility's can manage their reviews, 18 reviewers to date rated the men's FIRSTEP an average 4.9 out of five stars, with 16 perfect ratings, one three-star rating, and one one-star rating.[2] In comments, clients praised the staff, with alum Jeremiah writing: "the people I met here became my family and friends for life every blessing I have now I owe to the Lord almighty and firstep men's program."

Three loved ones polled by to date gave FIRSTEP widely varying ratings.

In comments, one loved one described the facility's atmosphere as "relaxed," praised the "Caring staff, family events," and concluded, "This was a positive experience for my family. It was a good choice for our needs." They provided four-star ratings for holistic offerings and treatment of co-occurring disorders, and five-star ratings for counseling options and the level of family participation.

Contrastingly, another loved one detracted the facility for a lack of other treatment options, writing, "No aftercare, limited services, no inclusion of family in the recovery process." T.G. gave one out of five stars when surveyed on whether or not they would recommend the center to others, and gave one-star ratings to holistic offerings and family inclusion as well.

The third loved one to submit feedback to date gave three-star ratings across the board, indicated that they would not recommend this treatment facility, and added, "Not really a rehab it's more of a work Based rehab."

On Google, two loved ones disapproved of FIRSTEP's supervision practices.[1] Loved one D.D. wrote, "At first it seemed like a great place. After visiting for 3 months, I have found that the men can walk out at anytime." M.C. added, "Drove right security. Had to go sign in in an unattended office nobody to ask who we were or check on what we might be bringing in."

Treatment costs approximately $45 per day per client. According to FIRSTEP's website, "No one is turned away because of their inability to pay." Seven survey respondents to date provided positive feedback regarding facility costs.
