ABOUT MERCY HOSPITAL

Mercy Hospital, located in Portland, Maine, is part of a faith-based network of hospitals that, according to its website, believes in "carrying out the healing work of Christ by providing clinically excellent, compassionate health care for all, with special concern for the poor and disadvantaged." The hospital runs a dedicated adult outpatient substance abuse treatment unit that offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, all clients receive a comprehensive medical assessment and substance abuse evaluation. The partial hospitalization program meets five days per week, for six hours each day. Length of the program varies from person to person, but most patients remain in PHP for four to eight days. During this time, individuals participate in group sessions and work with a therapist to create a continuing care plan.

Once clients are ready to move on, they can be admitted to the intensive outpatient program. It should be noted that Mercy Hospital’s IOP does not provide any medical treatment; issues that are psychiatric, medical, or medication-related are the sole responsibility of the client. All therapy is conducted in a group setting, though clients occasionally meet with a therapist to review their treatment and continuing care plans. A morning IOP program is offered five days per week, and an abbreviated afternoon program runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Length of treatment varies, but most clients remain in IOP for two to four weeks.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, Mercy Hospital employs registered nurses, licensed therapists, physicians, and physician assistants.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Eight alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave Mercy Hospital mixed reviews. The most common complaint was that the hospital offered only outpatient services, and six alumni rated the hospital’s counseling options an average 2.3 out of five stars. The hospital was rated highest in affordability and cleanliness at 3.5 stars and lowest in holistic treatment offerings at 2.2 stars.

Most alumni praised the staff and gave the treatment relatively solid feedback. The eight alumni rated Mercy Hospital an average 3.3 out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness. One anonymous alum wrote in a representative review: “Group therapy, good therapists, a lot of activities to do, able to spend time outside and see the city. ...Staff members were all experienced and offered good treatment."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Loved ones also offered solid feedback for staff and treatment. Four loved ones rated Mercy Hospital staff’s level of training and experience an average 4.25 out of five stars, while five loved ones rated its counseling options four stars and its holistic treatment offerings three stars, higher than alumni ratings. As one anonymous loved one wrote in a representative review: “Had the answers to all questions, compassionate and always friendly. Food wasn't the best but that's okay. Visitation was stick and limited but I guess that can be a good thing too. This place was amazing.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

June, the one staffer surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, gave Mercy Hospital a highly positive review, rating it mostly four and five out of five stars across 15 different evaluated metrics, including its client loyalty, honesty in marketing and public relations, willingness to put client interests first, and respect for client privacy. The only downside she noted was that the facility could use more staff.

FINANCING

According to Mercy Hospital’s website, most insurance providers cover treatment, as does Medicaid.

The best thing about Mercy is that SOME of the staff are very helpful, (while others have no idea what they're doing.) They do make it easy to treat a substance abuse issue simultaneously with other mental health issues and, (depending on WHO you work with,) the staff can be very effective at creating and assisting you to complete your treatment plans. More than half of the staff, either doesn't know how to do their job or they try to do a job that they're not qualified for. They will kick you out randomly, for little to no reason at all. If you relapse, instead of helping you when you need it, they will discharge you. Most of the staff are rude, but the worst thing about this place is that they closed down so they don't offer services anymore, such as prescriptions (that I need,) although they did help refer me to a new doctor. This place is closed down now, so inorder to get assistance with your substance abuse issue, you will have to travel far away to participate in an in-patient or out-patient rehab facility, OR you'll have to pay out the A*s for a private doctor.

Group therapy, good therapists, a lot of activities to do, able to spend time outside and see the city. No internet connection, not a very nice facility, not much to choose from for meals. The staff was really nice and non judgmental, diverse staff. Staff members were all experienced and offered good treatment.

Helped me get my life back together, taught me mindfulness and other coping skills. Taught me how to do things again but not how to enjoy them or know why it was good to be doing them. Taught me to be better but not feel better. This is the only treatment program in the area and isn't very serious. If your problem is more serious I would recommend going out of state.

Mercy Recover Center has a mission of serving the needs of those captured by addiction, and help them succeed to be free to live in their potential. The facility is supported by dedicated staff and recovering volunteers. Could use more staff.
