The Meriter NewStart Substance Use Treatment Program (New Start) is a substance abuse treatment program of UnityPoint Health-Meriter, a nonprofit community hospital based in Madison, Wis.. NewStart treats adults and adolescents primarily through outpatient programming. However, inpatient detox services are also available for adults. NewStart’s services include **intensive outpatient (IOP), aftercare, counseling services, and educational groups. *Medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction* is also offered.

Upon entering the Meriter NewStart Substance Use Treatment Program, patients undergo a medical assessment to determine which services and treatments are most appropriate. NewStart’s staff works with the client’s care providers to coordinate medical treatments, and referrals for Meriter physician treatments can be provided. If needed, clients are admitted to the detox unit. Once detox is complete, clients are enrolled in the IOP program. Adults in the IOP may choose morning or evening groups, both of which meet four days a week for three hours at a time. Most adult outpatient participants remain in the program for four to six weeks and meet with a counselor for one-on-one sessions as needed.

Similar programming is offered for adolescents ages 12 to 18. Treatment is designed to engage parents and address the needs of young people. The adolescent IOP meets twice a week, and counselors work with the client’s family, support systems, and educational providers to administer treatment with the least amount of disruption possible. If appropriate, NewStart may recommend a one-on-one counseling approach instead of group therapy.

Aftercare planning and support services are available to clients that complete the primary care programs. Medication management to help support sobriety is offered to both adults and adolescents. Aftercare includes medical, social, and emotional support during recovery. Family counseling, group therapy, and educational workshops are also available.

The treatment team includes nurses, physician assistants, and counselors, as well as board-certified physicians who specialize in addiction. All of Meriter NewStart Substance Use Treatment Program’s counselors have Master-level degrees in their respective fields.

Of the four alumni surveyed by at the time of this writing, three gave the facility positive reviews.

Alum Garrett gave the NewStart five out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its cleanliness, and its staff's level of training and experience, describing the treatment team as “caring and we'll trained.” He also gave the facility four out of five stars for its counseling options and noted: “They have different treatment plans for everyone depending on needs.”

The other two satisfied alumni, who provided feedback anonymously, reported positive experiences and gave the facility four- and five-star ratings for its treatment effectiveness.

The one negative reviewer gave the facility two out of five stars for its meals and nutrition, exercise and leisure offerings, connectivity/visitor policy, and counseling options. The alum complained about the lack of insurance coverage, the program’s high cost, and its lack of trained staff and extracurricular activities geared towards adults.

On Google, one alum gave the facility a five out of five star review. [1]

According to the facility’s website, insurance coverage for clients with substance abuse disorders vary widely with each carrier. NewStart suggests that clients get in touch with the facility to see if they are covered. Co-payments and self-pay payments are due before being discharged from the facility. Payments can be made using cash, debit cards, credit cards, and personal checks. A deposit for services may be required at the facility’s discretion based on an estimate of the client’s liability and insurance coverage. Medicare and Medicaid are also accepted.

They are caring and we'll trained. They have different treatment plans for everyone depending on needs. They have dual diagnoses for addiction and mental health. They HAVE A High Rate Of success. It doesn't have inpatient treatment available directly through them. Well I have been an addict off and on since I was young and since I attended the program I have been clean for 6 months. Many people I have met there also have alot of success and everyone I have talked to is very happy with the facility.

Medicare didn't want to cover me & I couldn't afford a co-pay; I have been in more structured, specialized tx centers that had adequate staff for counseling; didn't have a lot of extracurricular activities that were geared towards adults.

Good training program
