ABOUT MILLWOOD HOSPITAL

Located in Arlington, Texas, Millwood Hospital provides psychiatric and substance abuse treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. The facility offers both residential care, day treatment, and outpatient programs, as well as a specialized track for clients with co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders. Medically monitored detox services are available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the center’s website, treatment begins with a free assessment conducted by a qualified mental health professional, who will recommend the appropriate level of care. The residential substance abuse program, called Breakaway, is available for adults and is 12-step based. There is also an acute residential program offering stabilization for clients with severe psychiatric problems and a specialized, holistic track for elderly clients. Medication management and discharge planning are key components.

Outpatient options include a partial day program — which offers group therapy, weekly individual and family counseling sessions, and meetings with a psychiatrist for medication management — and an intensive outpatient (IOP) program. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing (MI) may be utilized.

Aftercare support groups and an alumni network are available to all Millwood graduates.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center’s website states the treatment team at Millwood Hospital includes board-certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, therapists, and psychologists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to Millwood Hospital’s website, the 122-bed facility is set in a straightforward, low-level brick building near Interstate 30.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Millwood received mixed reviews from former clients. The three anonymous alumni surveyed by Rehab.com at the time of this writing gave the facility five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness. “They went above and beyond what i expected,” an alum noted.

However, the 109 people who left reviews on Google for Millwood at the time of this writing gave a low average of two out of five stars.[1] Numerous alumni comments criticized the hospital for bad food, rude staff, and ineffective treatment. Some alumni called the center “evil," while another alum wrote they were “scarred for life.”

Further elaborating on Yelp, Tana wrote: "The techs/nurses actually started making fun of patients and they were so mean," giving just one out of five stars.[2] The facility had an average of just two out of five stars from nine reviews to date on this secondary review site.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of the three loved ones who were polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, two left negative reviews.

The one loved one who left a positive review wrote to Rehabs.com that while the program was costly, it helped their son and offered sufficient aftercare options.

Another anonymous loved one gave Millwood Hospital five out of five stars for accommodations and amenities and noted that the hospital offered “great activities and a positive environment,” but ultimately wrote: “There was no enough emphasis on treatment and was therefore ineffective.”

And a third anonymous loved one wrote there was no one-on-one counseling, and that their niece had to leave once her insurance ran out.

Family members also left commentary on secondary review sites, such as CiteHealth where 13 reviewers' ratings averaged 1.77 out of five stars to date.[3] Most noted problems with communication and poor management of clients. "Family is NEVER allowed to speak with the treating psychiatrist...Trying to reach a loved one is incredibly difficult and time consuming; constant misdirected phone calls, on hold for hours, phones not working etc."

WHAT STAFF SAY

Though Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback for Millwood Hospital from staff, many took to secondary sites to voice opinions, which were mixed. At the time of this writing, there were 28 ratings on Indeed that averaged 2.6 out of five stars and eight ratings on Glassdoor that averaged 2.4 out of five stars.[4] [5]

Though there were some positive statements, the majority of reviewers noted being "overwhelmed and overworked" with many warning job seekers not to work there. Several even noted believing that the organization was only out to make money. "They encourage intake to turn away patients who do not have insurance and refer instead to indigent services," an anonymous staffer wrote in a one-star review.

"Staff taking care of patients treat patients terribly and don't care. Units are dangerous due to minimal staff," another added on the same review site. Still, some offered a bit of positive feedback, including a reviewer who gave two stars but told Glassdoor: "Great place to learn about mental health diagnoses and working with children with behavioral issues, also had some great coworkers."

FINANCING

According to HealthGrove, Millwood offers sliding scale fees and accepts Medicaid and other state insurance, as well as military insurance and Access to Recovery vouchers.

The facility was a great place to be. The treatment was ineffective. The facility has great activities and a positive environment, but there was no enough emphasis on treatment and was therefore ineffective.
