ABOUT MOUNTAIN VISTA FARM

Mountain Vista Farm is set on eight secluded acres in Northern California’s Sonoma County. The Glen Ellen facility offers detoxification and a 30-day residential rehab program for adults struggling with substance use disorders. Treatment is holistic and 12-step-based. The Farm has been in operation for more than 50 years.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The initial assessment process for Mountain Vista Farm can begin for clients over the phone or in person. When necessary, clients undergo a monitored detoxification period on-site, for which addiction medication is available.

During the facility’s month-long, structured treatment program, residents do participate in individual counseling. The program’s focus, however, is on daily group counseling, support, and educational sessions. Classes prioritize relapse prevention tools, covering topics such as anger management and gender-specific experiences. Programming also involves recreation and wellness classes, including yoga.

A weekly family day featuring education, support groups, and visitation is prioritized on the facility's website. After completing 30 days of residential rehab, alumni are invited to attend a weekly aftercare group for up to two years. These are held at the Farm and in two other Bay Area locations.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Mountain Vista Farm employs a multidisciplinary team of chemical dependency counselors, master's-level therapists, and consulting medical staff. According to the facility’s website, many staff members are also in recovery.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Tree-lined pathways and gardens surround the Mountain Vista Farm residences, which accommodate 30 clients. Residents can enjoy views of the rolling mountains from several outdoor seating spaces. Bedrooms are semi-private, and website photos depict simple yet comfortable furnishings. To date, the seven individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the matter appreciated the facility's quality.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Four of the five former clients polled to date by Rehabs.com would recommend Mountain Vista Farm to others. The same number indicated that treatment was worth the cost. Data from more extensive polling of four alumni indicated especially high satisfaction with accommodations.

Feedback on the facility’s treatment practices tended to be more moderate. One alum suggested that there was an over-reliance on 12-step and group sessions, and another agreed that options in counseling approaches were limited, though appreciated the facility's staff. "I would, and have, recommend Mountain Vista Farms to anyone with an addiction," alum J.C. wrote.

Staff Experience and Training: 4/5

Alumni reviews on Google and Yelp for Mountain Vista Farm commonly cited the staff and serene setting as program strengths, but also a need for facility updating. Ten alumni contributed to an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars on Google for the facilityr, and 11 individuals contributing to an averaged rating of 3.5 out of five stars on Yelp.

Across the two secondary review sites, multiple alumni expressed concerns about the staff’s experience, with one writing on Google: “Can’t tell the difference between the patients and the ‘counselors.’” More frequently, though, former clients reported that the staff were available, patient, experienced, and supportive. On Google, B.L. noted that they provided “meaningful and caring” advice.[1]

Two alumni agreed on the facility’s over-emphasis on Alcoholics Anonymous.Several highlighted family participation and food. Multiple alumni, however, reported that the facility was rundown.[2] [3]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The seven loved ones polled by Rehabs.com provided consistently favorable feedback for Mountain Vista Farm. Six asked to rate an extensive set of metrics highlighted the facility’s staff and family programming as strengths.

Family Participation: 4.3/5

On the other hand, friends and family members tended to agree with alumni on limited variety in therapy, and two reviewers reported that 30 days of treatment was not adequate.

Counseling Options: 3.8/5
Holistic Offerings: 3.7/5

However, half the loved ones offered mediocre comments on accommodations and food.

Feedback from loved ones on Yelp and Google was overwhelmingly critical. I liked how they make you accountable for your actions. Call you on everything you're doing wrong, and have been doing wrong, that got you to the breaking point. They encourage forgiveness and reconciliation within marriage & with family - saying a person has changed, even if they are on the fence. Some of the people are fantastic, and really devoted to helping you recover, and are kind to your loved ones. Recovery is a long road, and a long process, and there may be more wrong with a person than *just* their addiction. Getting a person off all substances is one thing. Identifying character challenged individuals is another. I don't think people who lack empathy should be encouraged to reunite with their families. They need way more help than you can get here. Addiction is a choice. Staying sober is also a choice. Once you're off whatever substance you're addicted to - you still need to work on your character as a person. How you could do such destructive things to your loved ones. I'm not really sure if The Farm is helpful in this regard. But, for what they are - it's a good program. Being hard on a person is what it takes, and they do that.

Pleasant envoronment and caring staff. Food is fantastic and accomadatons are comfortable. Over-reliance on twelve step program with no other alternatives offerred. Lack of follow-up. If you are in need of recovery services this may be the place for you. There is plenty of time to relflect and meditate on the reason you are there. Grounds are beautiful and staff is caring. Facility could use a bit more one on one treatment. There may be too much reliance on group process.

Staff were a strength. However, distance of facility but it's a place that we chose for a loved one based on recommendations was a weakness.

I had a wonderful experience at MVF. I am coming up on 6 months and I feel fabulous. I feel I received all the tools I needed. I love coming to aftercare as often as I can!

Unfortunately a one month stay is NOT long enough time to make a significant change in most people addicted to a substance. And unfortunately one month is the amount of time most people are in rehab due to insurance coverage, ability to pay and or other issues.

I would, and have, recommend Mountain Vista Farms to anyone with an addiction. It was one of the smartest moves I ever made. My aftercare was twice a week at the facility, plus help in scheduling a therapist.
