For more than 35 years, Muskingum Behavioral Health (MBH) has been serving six Ohio counties. The nonprofit, Zanesville-based agency provides a continuum of substance use disorder treatment services, including outpatient prevention, education, psychotherapy, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), along with recovery housing for men and women.

According to the most recent federal data, MBH was one of just 38 (9.4 percent of 406) Ohio treatment facilities to provide outpatient detox. Services are evidence-based and include youth- and gender-specific programming.

Muskingum Behavioral Health drug and alcohol evaluations may result in recommended or court-ordered weekly substance information school or long-term intensive outpatient programming (IOP). Clients needing medical assistance to address opioid dependence may enroll in a once-a-month Vivitrol injection program with counseling.

The MBH website lists several regularly offered group sessions, which address such topics as parenting, grief and addiction, relationships, co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, family and friend support, and early contemplation of addiction treatment. Extensive family-oriented prevention programming is offered for adolescents, and both men and women have several gender-specific options.

Muskingum Behavioral Health also operates sober living residents for men and women, which involve peer accountability, drug and alcohol testing, and employment readiness services.

According to the Muskingum Behavioral Health website, the facility’s treatment team includes 21 health care professionals. Specifically, MBH employs board-certified psychiatrists, master’s-level therapists, and licensed chemical dependency counselors.

While the MBH website does not currently provide information regarding living arrangements or related offerings, a 2015 Zanesville Times Recorder story reported that the men’s recovery house is located in a converted 1920’s home with separate furnished apartments for four residents. No details are available on the women’s residence.

REVIEWS has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, friends or family members, or staff. Feedback left on Muskingum Behavioral Health’s official Facebook page, which its staff may monitor, was overwhelmingly positive. Eleven individuals rated MBH an average of 4.5 out of five stars. The sole reviewer to include commentary wrote: “Good place good people.”[1]

The Muskingum Behavioral Health website notes that the facility accepts but is out-of-network with most private insurance plans. A facility directory linked by the state department of mental health and addiction services indicates that residents of Peery, Muskingum, Nobel, Guernsey, Coshocton, and Morgan counties may receive payment assistance, and CiteHealth also reports that a sliding fee scale is available.

Muskingum Behavioral Health is growing. In January 2018, the local NBC affiliate reported on plans to move the facility within Zanesville, which would double group treatment space. The treatment staff had already doubled within seven years, in response to the opioid crisis.
