ABOUT NARCONON SOUTH TEXAS

Located in Harlingen, Texas, 42 miles west of South Padre Island, Narconon South Texas is a residential treatment facility designed for adult men and women struggling with chemical dependency. Founded in 1971 and operating multiple facilities internationally, Narconon is a non-traditional treatment program inspired by the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, though its website mentions that "Narconon is non-religious and a person does not become a Scientologist by doing the program." The facility offers non-medical detoxification services on-site, which is a major element of the facility’s overall treatment approach.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

A major component of the residential treatment program is the non-medical detoxification process, which is referred to as “New Life Detoxification.” The facility contends that drug or alcohol cravings are due to residual toxins (metabolites) left by prolonged substance abuse. To rid the body of these residual toxins, clients undergo non-medical detoxification through regular, extended sauna sessions to flush these toxins out, receive high dosages of vitamins and minerals, and participate in an exercise regimen.

According to Narconon’s website, the detoxification process “lasts until both the physical and mental pain completely goes away,” but the entire residential treatment program typically lasts between three and four months, though some programs may last longer. Throughout the detoxification process, a “ personal Withdrawal Specialist” helps to monitor each client’s sleep habits, fluid and food intake, and general progress through the process.

Once an individual completes the detoxification phase of treatment, they participate in coursework that is designed to increase life skills, communication skills, and mindfulness. These courses address issues such as living in the past, faulty perceptions, coping, and personal integrity. According to the facility’s website, this life skills coursework is designed “to help a person develop the self-control and personal backbone necessary to maintain a drug-free life.” 12-step participation is not supported, and Narconon does not accept the “disease model of addiction.”

In general, Narconon residential programs typically involve follow-up care for up to one year after discharge, which involves regular client communication with the facility. Narconon residential programs also typically offer a six-month residential aftercare program for alumni who wish to work at the facility. Alumni receive free room and board in staff housing, a job, and a small stipend.
