New Directions Treatment Services (NDTS) is a Pennsylvania-licensed nonprofit organization that specializes in “whole person” oriented outpatient treatment for individuals seeking recovery from substance dependency and other behavioral health issues. One of 284 (56.6 percecnt) nonprofits in the state of Pennsylvania, the community-based organization offers a range of outpatient-based treatment services, including several medication-assisted therapy (MAT) programs.

Located in Bethlehem, Pa., just east of Allentown, NDTS of Lehigh Valley is open weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Services are available in English and Spanish.

All clients undergo a substance abuse assessment upon intake to determine an effective individualized treatment plan. Where necessary, New Directions Treatment Services provides MAT to alleviate a client’s withdrawal symptoms and help reduce cravings. Some of the evidence-based medications available here include Suboxone, Naloxone, Naltrexone, and Vivitrol. New Directions of Bethlehem also has a methadone maintenance program. It is one of 79 Pennsylvania treatment facilities that have a dedicated Opioid Treatment Program.

Along with these pharmacological therapies to alleviate the physical effects of chemical dependency, NDTS requires that clients undergo regular drug screenings and attend counseling services and psychoeducational classes to address the psychological and emotional causes of addiction. A combination of individual, group, and family counseling sessions helps clients and families identify any underlying factors that may be contributing to their addictive behavior.

Psychoeducational groups support sustained recovery by emphasizing relapse prevention techniques like coping skills and trigger avoidance. Clients may also be introduced to established peer-led recovery programs such as the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

New Directions provides ongoing medication management throughout the treatment process, which is typically followed by a gradual tapering off the medication regimen. This way clients are ensured to receive effective, proportionate doses of medication. As they near program completion, clients prepare for a comprehensive discharge planning and may receive referrals to any additional needed services within the community.

New Directions Treatment Services employs board-certified adult psychiatrists, registered and licensed practical nurses, primary care physicians, and certified substance abuse counselors. NDTS also employs community-based care managers to conduct initial face-to-face assessments and point clients in the right direction.

While has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, secondary sources revealed mixed perspectives. On Google, for example, where 13 individuals collectively awarded NDTS a respectable average rating of 3.3 out of five stars, several reviewers expressed gratitude for treatment they described as effective and life-saving.[1] Others were critical, however. “Im very very displeased,” wrote Jamie on the facility’s upkeep. “The inside is very dirty. The waiting room is disgusting.”

In the sole survey response as of this writing, an anonymous loved one celebrated most aspects of the facility. They gave a perfect five stars for the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, the staff’s level of experience and training, and the family program. They did give only three stars for the counseling options but also noted the program’s “Well maintained schedule to keep you on track.”

New Directions Treatment Services accepts some private insurance plans like BlueCross BlueShield. NDTS accepts Medicaid, and is one of 92 (18.3 percent) facilities that accept Federal military insurance.

Well maintained schedule to keep you on track. If you need help, you should really seek treatment, and a well-maintained facility and staff could help with that. Also support from your family is really important too.
