Located in southern Minnesota’s Brown County, New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) is a small general hospital that provides treatment services to adults and children who are struggling with mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders. The nonprofit facility is one of fewer than one percent of 356 treatment centers in the state to provide hospital-based, inpatient detoxification services.

NUMC also manages an addiction and mental health services outpatient clinic in Mankato and is part of Allina Health Group, which includes Mercy Hospital - Unity Campus in Fridley, which offers a 28-day residential and 12-week intensive outpatient program.

Addiction services clients at New Ulm Medical Center begin with a chemical dependency assessment. If needed, medical detox is provided to assist with the withdrawal process from alcohol, opioids, or other drugs. Non-detox inpatient care, available for adolescents and adults, typically addresses primary psychiatric disorders. Outpatient programming is offered during daytime hours, Monday through Friday.

Individualized treatment plans, as appropriate, incorporate medication management; individual, group, and family therapy; and home-based mental health services. According to an American Hospital Association 2017 document, NUMC coordinates with regional drug courts to assess, recommend, and provide care. In 2017, 23.6 percent (84) treatment facilities in Minnesota provided specialized programming for clients involved in the criminal justice system.
