New Visions Center in Alexandria, Minn. was opened in 1998 as St. Luke's to offer treatment to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse disorders. The facility is part of a three-facility network that offers residential care and IOP services. Part of Thrive Behavioral Network, LLC, New Visions Center offers gender-specific residential and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs. The facility is also amongst the 180 (48.6 percent) treatment centers in the state with services to treat co-occurring disorders.

Clients struggling with opiate addiction can opt for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to ease withdrawal effects, placing it amongst the just 22.2 percent of Minnesota facilities with this offering; however, medically monitored detoxification services are not available on-site.

Prior to treatment, clients complete a psychological and physical health assessment. Facility staff members complete the evaluations to create a comprehensive diagnosis and determine the appropriate level of care for each client. If needed, a medical director is certified to prescribe buprenorphine to ease opioid withdrawal.

Residential treatment offerings include one-on-one therapy, co-occurring disorder education and screenings, gender-specific groups, family programming, and individualized assignments.

The high-level residential program lasts for 45 days and features scheduled groups, education and awareness, medication management, and family programming specific to individuals with co-occurring disorders. There is a medium-level program, which runs 45 to 90 days, that is ideal for clients who need slower-paced treatment.

The adult IOP program focuses on education, lectures, and family sessions. Offered one to three days per week, IOP also addresses relapse and co-occurring mental health disorders. A sister rehab center, 40 miles away in the town of Morris, offers similar services as well as an adolescent outpatient program. DUI classes are offered on Saturdays, though the fee is not covered by insurance.

New Visions is headed by a medical director and staffed with a variety of mental health professionals. The staff includes counselors, nurses, medical assistants, and administration.

New Visions’ 25-bed residential facility is located in a suburban house. The surrounding area features lakes and trails, offering opportunities for clients to fish, bike, or snowmobile, depending on the season. Clients also have access to several medical centers for a range of other treatments as needed. Out of five stars, the three individuals polled by to date gave New Visions’ accommodations and amenities two three-star ratings and a two-star rating.

The two alumni polled by to date gave moderately favorable feedback for the facility. While offering low ratings for exercise and leisure provisions and holistic treatment options, giving only three out of five stars or lower for each metric, both alumni gave four stars when asked how likely they were to recommend treatment at the New Visions Center. One alum wrote: "Better facilities may lead to better treatment," describing that facilities as "small and old."

The alumni noted that the strengths of the facility were the amount of family participation in treatment and overall cleanliness and upkeep, both giving four- and five-star ratings for these categories. "Most counselors are recovering addicts themselves making it easy for them to understand what one is going through," one alum wrote.

On its unofficial Facebook page, the facility received one perfect five-star rating and one one-star rating.[1] On, the facility earned five out of five stars from one reviewer who wrote: “If you need a good treatment to help straighten out your thought process you have come to one of the very best places.” [2]

At the time of this writing, the one staff member of
New Visions Center polled by offered mixed feedback. While the staff member gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, the individual gave the facility only one out of five stars for its holistic offerings and counseling options. The staff member agreed with alumni that family participation was a strength, also praising the "Home type atmosphere" and the "small groups." Additionally, this staff agreed with alumni that the facility itself was a weakness, commenting, "Old building, not handicap friendly/accessible, not able to treat people with severe health issues."

Cost of treatment varies based on the length of treatment and the method of payment. According to their website, New Visions accepts medical assistance as well as funding from other sources. Potential clients are encouraged to contact staff for further details. Reviews on the center's affordability were mixed, with a two-star rating, a three-star rating, and a five-star rating from the three survey respondents to date.

Love this place. I'm currently doing the high intensity in patient treatment program, and I couldn't ask for anything more. Group cohesiveness, and staff participation are phenomenal. The groups and counselors are also wonderful. The food is great and the nursing staff are well trained in the field, so I believe if you make the choice to be here you won't regret it. This place is saving my life.

Most counselors are recovering addicts themselves making it easy for them to understand what one is going through. Having gotten 4 dwi's and facing prison time, I had to do something. I messed up to begin with but New Visions Center had faith in me and accepted me back in their program. I have now been sober 5 years!

Strengths: Home type atmosphere, small groups, close to home. Weaknesses: Old building, not handicap friendly/accessible, not able to treat people with severe health issues. A residential treatment facility that is in a small out-state city.
