The Department of Psychiatry at North Shore Medical Center's (NSMC) Salem Hospital provides inpatient stabilization services for clients struggling with mental health or co-occurring substance use disorders. The facility also offers outpatient programs for the treatment of addiction and chronic mental illness. Outpatient programming is available in distinct groups for adolescents, adults, and seniors. NSMC operates a second psychiatric department at Union Hospital in Lynn.

According to the facility's website, individuals struggling with substance use or a dual diagnosis of a co-occurring psychiatric disorder can access treatment at any stage of illness. To promote stabilization, incoming clients may receive individual and family assessments, as well as client-focused therapy and a pharmacological intervention. Emergency psychiatric assessments are available 24/7.

One of the most prominent outpatient-based behavioral health programs of Salem Hospital is its partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as a day program. Adults participating in a PHP attend groups that utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that emphasize management of the disease and relapse prevention. Substance abuse evaluations, intervention, and medication management are also provided, along with case management services which coordinate a client's care among local agencies and providers.

The PHP for children and adolescents provides the same services, while applying dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) with an emphasis on interactive groups. The PHP for seniors focuses on neurological and integrates focus on any medical complications that may contribute to behavioral or psychiatric concerns. Other services include recovery coaching, medication management, recreational therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction programs.

Additional resources for clients and their families include the peer-run Learn to Cope North Shore parent support group, which is designed for families with loved ones struggling with an opioid addiction. Aftercare services are available.

The Salem Hospital treatment team includes board-certified child psychiatrists, geriatric specialists, nurses, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, substance abuse specialists, clinical case managers, and social workers.

At the time, I was the youngest in the program by a considerable number of years. The best thing and scariest part of the program were the others that were in there with me. Some were very supportive, friendly, and insightful. Without them, I would not have gone to group therapy and psychoed meetings. The patients that were "lifers" also had a profound impact on me as to the scope of the problem I was facing. While the program really only offered group treatment and psychoed sessions, these were informative, relevant, and REAL to my problem. Other treatment basically included meeting with my psychiatrist once a day on weekdays - they almost seemed irrelevant to the program. I was in the inpatient program for 2 weeks and the partial program for 2 weeks and my recovery was entirely due to the people I met there. That was about 9 years ago and despite small setbacks that are inevitable along the way, I have been on a steady treatment and reached great places in my life that I didn't think I'd get to.
