The Department of Psychiatry at North Shore Medical Center's (NSMC) Salem Hospital provides inpatient stabilization services for clients struggling with mental health or co-occurring substance use disorders. The facility also offers outpatient programs for the treatment of addiction and chronic mental illness. Outpatient programming is available in distinct groups for adolescents, adults, and seniors. NSMC operates a second psychiatric department at Union Hospital in Lynn.

According to the facility's website, individuals struggling with substance use or who have received a dual diagnosis of a co-occurring psychiatric disorder can access treatment at any stage of illness.

Most prominent is a partial hospitalization (PHP), also known as day program. Adults participating in a PHP participate in groups that utilize cognitive behavioral therapy and emphasize management of the disease and prevention of relapse. Substance abuse evaluations, intervention, and medication management are also provided, along with case management services which coordinate a client's care among local agencies and providers. One connection highlighted by the hospital is recovery coaching.

The PHP for adolescents provides the same services, while applying dialectical behavioral therapy with an emphasis on interactive groups.

Additional resources for clients and their families include the peer-run, Learn to Cope North Shore parent support group, which is designed for families with loved ones struggling with an opioid addiction.

The Salem Hospital treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, substance abuse specialists, nurses, and social workers.

The facility's inpatient psychiatric unit accommodates 26 patients. Outpatient treatment is provided in a separate building on campus.

The one former client surveyed by to date gave the facility a mixed review. They reported having participated in both inpatient and outpatient services, awarding the overall effectiveness of treatment three stars out of five. Noting both the limitations and positive aspects of treatment, the alum wrote: "While the program really only offered group treatment and psychoed sessions, these were informative, relevant, and REAL to my problem."

The same reviewer gave the facility mediocre ratings of three stars each for its staff support, options in counseling approaches, and quality of holistic offerings, and just one star for opportunities for family involvement. Crediting other clients in the program with contributing to their success in treatment, the former client characterized individual counseling with a staff psychiatrist as "almost . . . irrelevant."

Further feedback on the psychiatric department and substance abuse treatment at Salem Hospital is scarce at the time of this writing. The general hospital had an average rating of 2.5 out of five based on 53 Google reviews; most commentary complained of long wait times and poor staff interaction.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY has received feedback from two loved ones. One reviewer, asked to rate several aspects of the facility and treatment, awarded five stars for most. They would highly recommend the program to others and selected perfect ratings for the effectiveness of treatment, opportunities for family participation, counseling options, availability of dual diagnosis treatment, staff's level of training and experience, and the cleanliness of the facility. The quality of holistic therapy offerings received just three stars. They highlighted the "friendly, helping, caring" nature of the staff as a strength and noted the program's basis in group counseling.

The other loved one polled by agreed, awarding the facility four stars for treatment effectiveness and highlighting the program's family involvement and support.

The facility lists about 15 insurance plans accepted, encouraging clients to verify coverage.

At the time, I was the youngest in the program by a considerable number of years. The best thing and scariest part of the program were the others that were in there with me. Some were very supportive, friendly, and insightful. Without them, I would not have gone to group therapy and psychoed meetings. The patients that were "lifers" also had a profound impact on me as to the scope of the problem I was facing. While the program really only offered group treatment and psychoed sessions, these were informative, relevant, and REAL to my problem. Other treatment basically included meeting with my psychiatrist once a day on weekdays - they almost seemed irrelevant to the program. I was in the inpatient program for 2 weeks and the partial program for 2 weeks and my recovery was entirely due to the people I met there. That was about 9 years ago and despite small setbacks that are inevitable along the way, I have been on a steady treatment and reached great places in my life that I didn't think I'd get to.
