Northbound Treatment Services Philosophy

Our mission is to assist our clients in successfully celebrating one year of continuous sobriety. Northbound St. Louis provides quality drug and alcohol treatment services to the greater St. Louis areas and surrounding communities. Our services are unmatched in the region and provide the foundation for successful, lasting sobriety.

Areas of Specialization

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Patients who undergo intensive outpatient treatment continue to live at home and sometimes go to school or work while participating in a highly structured treatment protocol that is focused on ending substance abuse. Programs vary in terms of how much treatment patients receive, how often and for how long. Some facilities design individualized intensive outpatient treatment programs.

Northbound Treatment Services in downtown Kirkwood, Mo., a western suburb of St. Louis, offers outpatient care for individuals struggling with substance use disorder. Like 70 percent of Missouri-based facilities, the center can also accommodate those struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders.

Medical detox is not available on-site, but Northbound runs a detox and residential facility in Newport Beach, Calif., as well as another outpatient center in Seattle.

Northbound Treatment Services follows the disease model of addiction and bases its approach on the 12-step of model of recovery. The center is among the 67.3 percent of Missouri-based facilities that offer an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and standard outpatient care is also available. According to a 2015 profile of the facility, outpatient programming at Northbound St. Louis typically lasts 12 weeks and continues with a year of aftercare.

Clients attend treatment for at least nine hours per week in the IOP and three hours on the standard program. They participate in individual and group therapy and psychoeducation, and their families are invited to attend family therapy, a weekly family support group, and educational sessions. Following completion of the fist phrase, clients have access to a year of aftercare meetings as well as an alumni group and recovery coaching.

The program is run by a licensed clinical social worker who's also a certified alcohol and drug counselor, and at least one member of staff is in recovery. Out of five stars, the two individuals polled by to date on the level of staff support gave it a two-star and a three-star rating.

Northbound St. Louis alumni give mostly positive feedback with some notes of strong complaint: of the eight reviews submitted to to date, six were positive, two were not.

Positive reviewers described Northbound St. Louis as “an outstanding facility,” and its staff as caring individuals fully capable of both connecting with clients and responding to their issues. “They saved my life, and I’m forever grateful for that... They went above and beyond to help me out," J.H. wrote in a representative comment. “They treat you with respect, tell you the truth, and help you map out a plan for the future,” R.D. added.

But A.A. had problems with the center's staff, writing: “The counselors were nice but weak and bullied by the recruiter into doing things his way." A.A. gave the center just one or two stars in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its holistic offerings and the overall quality of its group counseling, and also indicated that the center did not live up to its marketing materials. And fellow alum Bob wrote simply, "weak."

Secondary sites don't currently offer any reviews of the Kirkwood location, but 32 reviewers on Facebook (where the center can curate its own page) have given the organization as a whole a 4.6 out of five-star average rating.[1] The reviewers repeatedly praised the center's facilities and staff: "A great place. Got truly sober here. Helpful staff and nice facilities," Kevin wrote in a typical comment.

The two affiliated friends and family members polled by to date gave polarized feedback. "I frequently refer to the Northbound facility because of the excellent services they provide their patients," wrote A.J., a therapist and loved one of a former client who went to Northbound.

However, loved one J.G wrote: "Get rid of the program director and get some counselors with more backbone and open mind toward alternative treatments." In the opinion that the center pushed the 12-steps too hard and narrowly, J.G. gave the center two stars for its family involvement and addiction treatment and one star for its mental health treatment and leadership.

According to the facility's website, Northbound Treatment Services is among the 71.2 percent of Missouri-based facilities that accept private insurance. The single individual polled by to date on the center's pricing gave it a three-star rating.

The intensive outpatient treatment program at Northbound allowed me to have a firm foundation in recovery. The counselors guided me in my journey in emotional sobriety, making it comfortable for me to be vulnerable and open to deep emotional wounds so that I could begin to heal. I am grateful for the spiritual and emotional recovery I currently live with today.

I went to outpatient treatment in California AND am currently an alumni at NorthBound in St.Louis. My therapist and Case Manager have been awesome! Love ALL the groups I go to. Have learned SO much and continue to learn. They are BOTH very professional and knowledgeable! Have helped me with SO many things in my recovery! HIGHLY recommend Northbound services for alcoholics and addicts!

Professional, knowledgeable, and caring is what I would best describe the staff at Northbound Treatment Services. They understand the disease of addiction and work tirelessly with clients and their families to a better life. I attended Northbound Outpatient Treatment in Kirkwood, and completed their three month program. Having been to several treatments over the years, Northbound was far and away the most effective treatment that I have ever participated in. They have some of the best counselors, not to mention people in general, that I have ever met. They genuinely care about their clients, and show that with a willingness to be available to them day or night, even outside of normal program hours. Their methods of connecting with clients and responding to their issues are, from my experience, one of a kind and extremely effective. If you, or a loved one, are struggling with any type of substance abuse, I would without a doubt recommend Northbound.
