About Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Service Inc

Reviewed by Our Contributors

Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Service, located in Newport, Vt., is a full-service outpatient center serving adults and children. One of only 38 outpatient facilities in Vermont, the facility offers treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. NKHS also works with the local authorities to provide correctional services, including offender re-entry, Court Rapid Intervention Response, and Family Treatment Court.

Though a regular outpatient program, NKHS also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program and residential services for those who may need it. The center also performs psychological evaluations and offers Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT), making one of only 11 facilities in Vermont (0.8 percent) to do so.

According to its site, NKHS offers mental health and substance abuse programs that are intended to provide unified, holistic, and seamless access to assessment and treatment for people with co-occurring disorders. The overall objective is to treat substance abuse by attacking the root issue: co-occurring mental health disorder. The facility utilizes individual, group, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Adolescents struggling with substance abuse may receive treatment through co-occurring screening, assessment and evaluation, individual and group therapy, case management, and school based intervention and support.

The clinical team at NKHS consists of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, licensed co-occurring-capable clinicians, and the entire staff work with local children’s services as well when necessary.

An outpatient facility, little is stated about the amenities at NKHS. Images show a large, modern two-story building with ample parking.
