ABOUT NORWALK HOSPITAL - BEHAVIORAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

Located just west of central Norwalk, Norwalk Hospital is a nonprofit medical and teaching hospital with more than 300 beds. It's one of three hospitals operated by the Western Connecticut Health Network.

The hospital's behavioral and mental health services include inpatient psychiatric care for primary mental illnesses and related acute conditions, plus outpatient care at several intensities for individuals struggling with mental health disorders, substance misuse, and/or dual diagnosis. The facility doesn't currently specify whether the unit provides medical detox services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation designed to determine the most appropriate course of care. Inpatient psychiatric care at Norwalk Hospital is for acute cases only, and is designed only to stabilize symptoms until clients can transition to a lower level of care. Inpatients might receive medication management and participate in group and recreational therapies. When appropriate, the inpatient unit can also provide electroconvulsive therapy.

For individuals struggling with addiction, the most intensive levels of dedicated care are a dual diagnosis intensive outpatient program (IOP) and an evening IOP for individuals struggling with substance use disorder (positioning the hospital among the 45.7 percent of Connecticut-based addiction treatment facilities that provide IOPs). Both programs draw from the 12-Steps (which are used at a relatively low 70 percent of Connecticut-based facilities) and use case management, psychiatric consultations, and medications, when necessary.

The dual diagnosis program meets three mornings a week and uses evidence-based programs such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT, in use at 53.8 percent of Connecticut facilities). The substance misuse program meets four evenings a week to fit around work schedules, and uses motivational interviewing (MI) as well as the aforementioned therapies.

Individual, group, and family therapy are also available outside of the IOP for those struggling with disorders including substance misuse, anxiety, and depression, as well as life stages and difficulties such as parenting, grief and bereavement, and divorce and separation. Services also include dedicated groups for women and Spanish-speakers. Programming is available in the evening as well as the daytime.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, this facility employs psychiatrists, registered nurses, social workers, and therapists trained in special topics and techniques related to mental health and substance use. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The behavioral health department doesn't currently give any details of its sleeping accommodations, though potential inpatients can likely expect a clinical, hospital-style environment. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five out of five stars for its cleanliness and its exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received feedback from any of this facility's alumni, and secondary sites yield no review coverage of the behavioral health department, though they do reveal some feedback on the hospital as a whole, and it's mixed: the hospital has average ratings of three our of five stars based on 31 reviews on Yelp, 2.6 stars based on 98 reviews on Google, and 3.9 stars based on 406 opinions on Facebook (where the facility may manage its own page).[1] [2] [3]

Numerous reviewers praised the hospital's staff, describing teams that went the extra mile for clients and their loved ones. However, there were also significant repeated complaints of long wait times, careless or inaccurate diagnoses, and billing problems, among other difficulties. "The whole process took a little longer then i hoped for but at the end of the day i am very pleased by the care i received. UPDATE: overcharged the hell out of me! Almost had to go back to the ER when I opened up my bill," Jim wrote in one illustrative comment on Google.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, identifying no weaknesses with the behavioral health department. They gave the facility four stars for its affordability and their likelihood to recommend its treatment, and five stars in all of the other evaluated treatment metrics, including its family participation, counseling options, ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and holistic offerings. "Great all around," the anonymous reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

The hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances (which are accepted at 54.8 percent, 85.7 percent, and 80.5 percent of Connecticut-based rehabs respectively). Financial assistance is available for uninsured clients who qualify. The single reviewer polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center four out of five stars for its affordability.
