On-Belay House Anthony Louis Center - Male Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Philosophy
Teenage substance abuse affects emotional and social functioning, as well as the healthy development of family relationships. The goal of the Anthony Louis Center On Belay House in Plymouth, Minn is to help adolescent boys develop the skills they need to cope with life’s stresses without turning to drugs and alcohol. Residential treatment provides male teens with a safe and supportive place to examine their substance abuse and behavioral problems, become educated about the disease of addiction, and discover alternative methods for facing life’s challenges and having fun.
Areas of Specialization
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

ABOUT ON-BELAY HOUSE ANTHONY LOUIS CENTER – MALE ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT
The Anthony Louis Center, a substance abuse treatment program established by On-Belay of Minnesota in 1982, runs multiple, state-licensed facilities for adolescents struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. "On-Belay" is a term used in the sport of mountain climbing that means "securely supported." The organization’s On-Belay House in Plymouth, Minn., exclusively serves male adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. The rehab is a residential primary and extended care program.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Length of treatment varies depending on the client. Some young people are best suited for a short-term residency, which ranges from 45 to 60 days, while others may require extended care from 60 to 120 days. During their stay, residents receive individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) counseling and participate in group therapy, family counseling, educational lectures, and life skills workshops. Dietary and nursing services also are available to all residents. Individuals who still are in school may continue their education through a partnership with District 287, a provider of specialized educational services.
According to the center’s website, On-Belay House focuses on “the importance of family and community as a conduit for successful change.” As part of its programming, the center offers residents comprehensive case management, which engages family members and provides formal home plans to those who complete treatment. After clients successfully leave this program, most attend an intensive outpatient program close to their home.
The center’s multidisciplinary staff includes a medical director, registered nurse, consulting licensed clinical psychologist, master’s level clinicians, licensed chemical dependency counselors, and dietician. On-Belay is licensed as a Children's Residential Facility through the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The residence, located in a quiet, rural neighborhood, can accommodate 20 adolescents at a time. Rooms are for two to four clients. A chef cooks home-style meals with assistance from the residents, who share in meal preparation as part of their rotating list of chores.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Alumni reviews are scarce, as Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from alumni, but what is available on secondary review sites is unfavorable. On CiteHealth, the men’s On-Belay House Anthony Louis Center received just 1.6 out of five stars based on five reviews to date. An anonymous alum who submitted a review to CiteHealth rated his overall experience only one out of five star stars, citing the staff's lack of compassion and professionalism. He wrote: “I was ridiculed for my faith, sexual orientation, severe chronic depression, refused help for my mental health concerns or and medical care, and this is not a treatment facility; it's a dumping-hole for kids with problems run by untrained, unskilled, non-professionals.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Feedback from loved ones largely is negative. Three CiteHealth reviewers provided low marks for the overall program. One anonymous reviewer expressed outrage at tactics that included “using punishment and ridicule to force them into submitting to your behavioral modification techniques." Another wrote: “They are more interested in recommendations that benefit their financial outcomes rather than the health and well-being of your child. I deeply regret that we ever walked through their doors.”
Yet, one CiteHealth reviewer reported a positive experience in a four-star review. They wrote: “It was certainly disheartening to read the other reviews on this site. Clearly they were written by people who did not successfully complete the program. On Belay saved my son's life. The staff were caring and offered support to our entire family. Even though we have a long journey head of us I am glad we went to On Belay!”
On-Belay House does not publish its fees online; however, its list of accepted insurances is extensive, which includes Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Optum, and United Healthcare. Some scholarships are available to those who qualify.
