ABOUT ORCHARD PLACE
Since 1886, Orchard Place, a nonprofit organization based in Des Moines, Iowa, has provided children, teens, and young adults with a full continuum of mental health treatment services. More than 10,000 children from birth to age 22 are served annually through Orchard Place's inpatient, outpatient and community services.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment for children is offered through Orchard Place's four branches of services: Orchard Place-Child Guidance Center (outpatient), Orchard Place Campus (residential psychiatric institute), PACE Juvenile Center, and an Integrated Health Program (case management and care coordination).
Orchard Place-Child Guidance Center is a federally accredited community mental health treatment center that provides comprehensive outpatient services. These include direct clinical services such as outpatient and family therapy, school-based mental health services, trauma informed care, and referral programs. The number of outpatient sessions is determined by the unique needs of the client and family.
Children in need of residential treatment have been coming from all over Iowa to attend Orchard Place Campus since the 1960's. With the ultimate goal of improving each child's emotional, mental, and academic functioning, treatment incorporates psychiatric evaluations and services, individual, family, and group therapy, and recreational therapy. Education services and tutoring and mentoring are offered through an on-site school that works directly with Des Moines Public School teachers. In addition, 24-hour nursing staff are available, as are pediatric exams and consultations.
PACE works with the Juvenile Court and DHS, but referrals for treatment can also be voluntary and made by parents with the help of teachers, therapists, physicians, or guidance counselors. Youth undergo individual evaluations by PACE staff and may enroll in intensive outpatient, extended outpatient, or continuing care treatment. PACE’s approach incorporates motivational interviewing and work on co-occurring mental health disorders. Clients typically participate in a combination of individual counseling, group sessions, and family therapy.
Integrate Health Programs are available for all children 18 years or younger, struggling with mental or emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, and OCD.
The residential facility employs a multidisciplinary treatment team of a pediatrician, master's level, licensed therapists, youth and child psychologists and psychiatrists, a recreational therapist, a dietician, and around-the-clock nursing staff.
PACE employees who provide direct care are required to be certified alcohol drug counselors (CADC), and all therapists are licensed social workers or mental health counselors.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Clients at Orchard Place's 103-bed residential facility have a wide range of activities available to them including creative writing, painting, a 5K run, pet therapy, mentoring and tutoring, holiday parties, and other events.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
At the time of this writing there has been one friend or family member who has been polled by Rehabs.com. The loved one and parent of a client, A.W. gave the facility a two out of five star rating for treatment effectiveness, a four stars rating for accommodations & amenities, and five stars for meals & nutrition.
A.W. strongly disagreed when asked if the facility strictly followed a 12-step model; if the facility strictly offered a faith-based program; and if the facility had high quality holistic offerings. She strongly agreed that there were many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference; if the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; and if she would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab.
When asked about the facility’s strengths, A.W. wrote “Very compassionate and structured. Involved me as the parent in treatment goals.” She wrote that a weakness was the “Huge turn over on the staff. Lack of autism knowledge.” A.W. added additional commentary, stating “Very high success rate.”
Orchard Place does not list its program fees online, nor does it state whether or not it works with any insurance providers.
