Outback Serenity Center Philosophy

Treatment at Outback Serenity Center is faith-based and utilizes a Christ-centered 12-Step recovery curriculum. The rehab believes that addiction is a lifestyle-related health problem that comes with biological, spiritual, sociological and psychological implications. By cultivating a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and applying biblical principles to every day life, clients learn how to accept God’s love, feel whole once again and find the strength to recover from addiction.

Areas of Specialization

  • 12-Step
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

  • Residential Treatment
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

ABOUT OUTBACK SERENITY CENTER

Outback Serenity Center, located in Hazlehurst, in southeast Georgia, offers residential, faith-based treatment for adult men struggling with substance abuse. According to its website, the mission of the facility is for clients to “learn a new concept and design for living based on the truths and principles of God’s Word as taught from a recovery perspective.” Within the state, Outback Serenity Center is among 17.2 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that offer long-term, residential non-hospital care.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, clients are required to commit to a minimum of six months for the Outback Serenity Center recovery program. Residents follow a Christ-centered, 12-step curriculum that draws on personal examination and the application of biblical principles.

"Step-work" is supplemented by daily group counseling and weekly individual counseling, plus devotions, Bible study, and therapeutic recreation. The treatment team considers addiction a symptom of deeper issues that may need to be addressed in a person’s life, and that addiction may cause an individual to deem themselves unworthy of love or unable to accept the love of God. Treatment aims to address those feelings.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility does not publish specifics of its staff’s credentials. However, according to a video on the website, the director and property manager established the facility because he had struggled with substance abuse and wanted to provide those in this situation with a safe and healing haven.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Outback Serenity Center is a rustic rehabilitation facility with open landscapes with horse stables. Treatment is offered from a secluded environment surrounded by woods and open green space seven miles outside of the small town of Hazlehurst. Photos on the facility’s website show extensive grounds with a woodworking shop and chapel where clients can engage in song and worship, outdoor swings, barbeque area and dining pavilion, fire pit, and lake with canoes. Bedrooms are spacious and shared. Family wellness and communication is encouraged and facilitated by events such as holiday celebrations.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, four alumni submitted favorable feedback about Outback Serenity Center to Rehabs.com, specifically praising the faith-based approach of the facility. D.R.H. gave perfect five-star ratings for a range of survey metrics, including the facility's ability to resolve conflict, extracurricular activities, and amount of staff support, as well as four stars for respect shown to clients and three stars for staff experience and training. “The Christian based center was my main factor I went here,” D.R.H. wrote.

Two others gave five-star ratings for the overall effectiveness of the facility. “I am so thankful for everything I learned. It was a life changing experience,” one alum wrote. Another alum now works at the center in an effort to “give back to the ministry by running the office, bills and taxes quick books,” after sustained sobriety. Although the fourth alum wrote, “This rehab is alright,” they were critical of bed bugs, forced church services, and a lack of staff engagement at times, though was not critical of the faith-based approach.

FINANCING

Outback Serenity Center does not share information about the cost of treatment online. One alum surveyed by Rehabs.com indicated that financial support was not available, but they believed the program to be worth the cost.

Its a nice facility with a staff that cares about long term sobriety. Faith is strongly encouraged in the steps to recovery. Spiritual awakenings is vital to long term recovery. The atmosphere and environment is beneficial. More staff is needed at times.

There is potential for this program to serve a very under served area of the state. Options and bias are factored into the treatment here and the success rate is no different than those that attend daily NA meetings. Anger management should be a program that is also stressed at the facility for both the staff and attendees.

This rehab is alright. They had bed bugs at one time and they tried to push the issue under the rug....The manager is also a pastor so you will go to his church, you also listen to him while he is at the center. He really likes to hear himself talk. A lot of people there just put on long enough to get through with the treatment. Nothing is wrong with getting to know Jesus Christ, I am proud to say I am a child of Jesus Christ, but it should not be slammed down your throat.Sometime the staff act like it is a bother for you to want to talk to them, some are to busy worrying...instead of trying to help people.

I work at the Outback and was a former resident. I have been Clean and sober three years and I also give back to the ministry by running the office, bills and taxes quick books.
