Palmer's Tulsa Women and Children's Center Philosophy

At Palmer’s Tulsa Women and Children’s Center (TWWC), chemically dependent pregnant women and mothers receive comprehensive residential substance abuse treatment in a family-friendly environment. Women 18 years of age and above are invited to bring children under the age of 12 to live with them during treatment. Clients receive parenting education as well as addiction treatment services while children and toddlers participate in on-site childcare programming.

Areas of Specialization

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

  • Individualized Treatment
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.

ABOUT PALMER’S TULSA WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S CENTER

Palmer is a private nonprofit that runs two centers in Tulsa, Okla: one for adolescents and adults, and another for pregnant and parenting women. The Tulsa Women and Children's Center (TWCC), in a quiet location six miles northeast of downtown Tulsa, is one of only nine (4.7 percent) in Oklahoma that offers beds for residents' children. In addition, it is amongst the just 110 (57.6 percent) centers in the state with female-centered programming. The center provides residential and outpatient treatment, including medical and psychiatric services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at TWCC is focused on helping families stop the cycle of addiction. Clients hoping to be admitted are assessed for eligibility, and then put on a waiting list, with priority status given to pregnant women, intravenous drug users, women with dependent children, and women with HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C.

The residential program has a dual focus on treating chemical dependency and imparting parenting skills. With their children safely cared for in the on-site child care center/school, the women participate in 35 hours per week of tailored addiction treatment including medical and psychiatric services, mental health therapy, trauma therapy, domestic violence counseling, and case management.

Every week, clients also receive seven hours of parenting instruction and participate in four hours of process group. Clients are also encouraged to take part in art therapy and leisure activities on evenings and weekends. Clients who graduate from the residential program may utilize the facility's outpatient services as aftercare.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

TWCC's treatment team includes registered nurses, physicians and a psychiatrist, as well as certified substance abuse counselors (CSAC), licensed professional counselors (LPC), licensed family and children therapists, certified case managers, and recreational therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Children under the age of 12 may stay with their mothers at the 52-bed facility. Children attend school or pre-school and also receive between seven and 12 hours of structured counseling per week, depending on their age. Smoking is prohibited, and no tobacco products of any kind are allowed on campus.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date on overall treatment effectiveness gave Palmer one four- and two five-star ratings. Tracy, who chose the facility so her young son could stay with her, called the center “clean and safe,” and the counselors “excellent.” Her only complaint was that the bedrooms were small, the bathrooms shared, and the dining room noisy. Alum R.C. added, "I am eternally greatful for the 5 star therapy and care we received there. The RCS staff and therapists treated us with kindness and respect."

Secondary sources revealed highly positive alumni reviews. On Google, Palmer received a 4.4 out of five-star average rating from five alumni to date,[1] and on Facebook, which the facility may manage, 18 reviewers rated the facility an average 4.9 out of five stars.[2] Alumni were grateful for the program and staff. Google user K.E. wrote, "I kept coming back.I been with palmer a year. I am now in wings of freedom," and E.M. added, "A place for Mom & Children to get the help they need to get Healthy!" On Facebook, multiple comments credited the facility with saving their life.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

One of the two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave an extremely negative review, commenting upon low-quality food and a poor administration. "The nurse are a joke. They don't know nursing," Shermie wrote. Loved one S.S., on the other hand, left only one brief comment, noting the fair price afforded by state funding.

FINANCING

At TWCC, services are provided without regard to a woman’s ability to pay, and programs are typically provided at no charge.

This place saved my life and family. I am eternally greatful for the 5 star therapy and care we received there. The RCS staff and therapists treated us with kindness and respect. They are definitely doing it right. The in-house day care was top notch and my son really benefited from their program as well as loved his teachers. We both learned alot and were able to heal together. I recommend this facility to anyone seeking a real life changing experience and real recovery.

That place needs to be close. They use the girls food stamps but feed them chips and sandwiches. They run off donation. The nurse are a joke. They don't know nursing. The administration is laughable. My family member counselor was d administrator. They never a session. Wonder how they charged for that? Please go somewhere else. This place is horrible.

I have been clean and sober for 5 years now. Could not have happened on my own. I am very thankful and grateful for every thing. My children are thriving. And we look back on the place and remember so many good times.

Only place where i could take young son with me. Overall a clean and safe environment. A chef comes in 5 days a week to prepare lunch/dinner. Excellent counselors. Rooms are small and you have to share a bathroom with 2 other rooms. So there could be as many as 10 people per bathroom. Lunch/Dinner time is extremely noisy while everyone is gathered in dining room waiting on food.
