Formerly known as Serento Gardens Alcohol and Drug Services, Pathway to Recovery in Hazleton, Penn., is one of the longest operating substance abuse treatment and education centers in the state. The facility serves individuals struggling with substance dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. Programming includes outpatient counseling, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and medication-assisted therapy (MAT).

This nonprofit clinic also provides access to additional services, including smoking cessation programs, driving under the influence (DUI) education, conflict mediation, employee assistance, and referrals for mental health treatment.

All clients at Pathway tor Recovery undergo an initial evaluation to help determine their needs, goals, and the most appropriate level of treatment. Based on the findings, some may enroll in outpatient care, which is a mix of individual counseling, family and marital therapy, and process groups that covers topics including life skills, gender-specific concerns, addiction education, and relapse prevention. Clients experiencing severe withdrawal from opiates or alcohol may be recommended for MAT and be prescribed naltrexone, Campral, methadone, or buprenorphine.

For adult clients who require a higher level of care, Pathway to Recovery offers a PHP. According to the center’s website, the PHP “is designed to provide the structure and intensity of inpatient rehabilitation in an outpatient setting.” While this level of care is higher than individual and group outpatient treatment, the schedule allows clients to continue to attend work or school and fulfill obligations at home.

The DUI Program offers a range of services, including Court Reporting Network (CRN) evaluation, as well as an alcohol safe driving school, multiple offender programs, and counseling.

Pathway to Recovery is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and is a member agency of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of the Greater Hazleton Area, and the Association of Recovery Schools. The center is directed by a President and CEO, who holds a master’s level degree in counseling, a license in professional counseling, and international certificates in advanced alcohol and drug counseling, clinical supervision, and co-occurring disorders.

An alum surveyed by at the time of this writing offered a mixed review. This former client appreciated the program’s educational components, commenting on the “good instruction on how to stop drinking.” However, this individual did not think all of the staff members offered a consistent level of care. “No faith in some of the counclers,” they wrote.

On its Facebook page, which Pathway to Recovery may manage, individuals posted positive feedback. [1] To date, the facility received an average of five out of five stars based on two reviews (presumably from an alum as well as an employee). Five-star reviewer Bill did not post a comment when submitting a rating in August 2016. However, staff member Eileen did, noting: “We have a caring highly experienced staff who will help you achieve sobriety!”

A loved one polled by about Pathway to Recovery provided favorable feedback. This individual would highly recommend the facility to others by awarding it five out of five stars and offering the same top-tier rating for family participation and cleanliness. This reviewer also awarded four out of five stars for counseling options, the level of staff experience and training, and connectivity, as well as three stars for exercise and leisure activities and affordability.

Pathway to Recovery accepts most major insurance plans. For clients without insurance, the facility determines its fees based on a sliding scale.
