Founded in 1984 and located in Lynchburg, Va., Pathways at Virginia Baptist is located at Virginia Baptist Hospital, and it is amongst the 85 (37.1 percent) facilities in the state to offer outpatient care to adults struggling with substance abuse. Residential treatment is available through an associated program, Pathways Recovery Lodge, located in Amherst, Va. Medical stabilization and detoxification services are available through the hospital.

According to the facility's website, admission into the treatment program is voluntary. Clients can self-refer or be referred by family members, physicians, employers, pastors, and friends.

Clients in the intensive outpatient program (IOP) can meet during the day or evening to help accommodate work schedules, family duties, and other responsibilities. Individuals in this program meet for three hours a day, four days a week, for six to eight weeks.

Outpatient group sessions are designed to teach individuals about the practical experience of staying clean, such as implemented relapse prevention techniques and improving coping skills. In group, clients can ask questions, share experiences, and develop healthy interaction skills.

Pathways has an aftercare program for people in early recovery after treatment at Pathways or Pathways Recovery Lodge. Aftercare is designed to help clients transition to a 12-step support group and locate other community-based resources to support recovery.

The center's website indicates the treatment team includes psychiatrists. In Virginia, 97.3 percent of all treatment facilities have continuing education requirements for staff. Of the three alumni surveyed by at the time of this writing, one gave five out of five stars for the staff's level of training and experience, while the other two gave four stars.

The three alumni polled by at the time of this writing provided mostly positive feedback. All three gave five out of five stars when asked if they would recommend Virginia Baptist Hospital, and all three gave four- or five-star ratings for the facility's counseling options and its admissions and discharge procedures.

"They helped me talk about my problems in a group they helped me stop smoking marijuana," one of these alumni wrote. Although only giving one-star ratings for the facility's holistic offerings and the level of family participation, another alum felt the facility was "well maintained." The third alum gave five-star ratings for the facility's counseling options and added: "Felt like home."

On Google to date, four reviewers generated an average rating of three out of five stars.[1] One former client shared a negative experience with unfair discharge procedures, and the loved one of a former client echoed an alum report that drugs were brought into the facility.

According to the center's website, Pathways is in-network with multiple insurance providers. All three individuals surveyed by at the time of this writing gave five out of five stars for its affordability.
