Pathways to a Better Life, LLC Philosophy
The primary goal at Pathways is to provide a safe, family-style setting for individuals suffering with the disease of addiction. The residential drug and alcohol rehab offers 90-day treatment plans and a variety of therapeutic modalities to teach clients how to maintain a healthier lifestyle, manage overwhelming feelings and enjoy a better quality of life. Non-judgmental care is given within a holistic model, addressing the physical, psycho-social and spiritual needs that substance abuse blocks. Clients learn how to participate in daily life without alcohol and drugs, and develop the skills necessary to live a fulfilling and independent life in sobriety.
Areas of Specialization
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.

ABOUT PATHWAYS TO A BETTER LIFE, LLC
Set on 38 rural acres in Kiel, Wis., Pathways to a Better Life offers residential and sober-living services for adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The center also has a 12-bed sub-acute detox facility.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
If necessary, clients first enter the medically-monitored detox center. During detox, staff work with clients to determine the level of treatment needed and place them into the appropriate program on-site or in the community.
The average length of stay is 60 days, but each client’s progress is reviewed weekly. Treatment is based on the 12-Steps and is supplemented by evidence-based programs such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) through group and individual counseling. The center also offers family counseling, in the shape of weekly family group sessions on Saturdays and a monthly family alumni group.
Pathways to a Better Life aims to treat the mind, body, and spirit, and to provide opportunities for sober social interaction. The program, which takes place in a trauma-informed environment, fosters development of a healthy lifestyle, self-actualization, and restoration. There are dedicated programs for LGBT clients, though the organization does not provide details of these.
During treatment, staff assists with developing aftercare plans to maintain sobriety and ensure the client is supported before discharge. Pathways also leases local apartments, which it rents to graduates of the residential program as sober-living facilities.
The detox center is staffed by a registered nurse who is supervised by a board-certified physician. Licensed substance abuse and mental health counselors are also on staff.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Up to 16 clients at a time sleep in two separate homes, some of them in private rooms with simple furnishings. The grounds sprawl over 38 wooded acres, and there’s also a lake on-site and a “gratitude garden.” Clients are able to go fishing and play basketball.
