I went to Heart seven years ago. I stayed on after my six weeks as a volunteer for an additional four months. Because I wanted to stay. I hated it at first. The rules, the schedules, the chores... Badu ally, the structure. As addicts/alcoholics we lack structure. And we need a higher power. This place taught me that I did not NEED what I craved. I craved what I needed. To reconnect with God, to be a part of a community, and to give back what was given to me. I stayed on as a volunteer. Yep, room and board, but best yet... I got the chance to be a part of women's lives who felt alone and then found they weren't. I left because I knew it was time. You can't hide from your disease and you have to face the world. Sober. Scary after such a safe space... but I did it. I still miss that oasis that saved my life... That was my experience. All others may vary.

Most of the \"Group Leaders\" work there in exchange for room and board, as well as sleep and eat among you, and are previous \"Graduates\" of the 6-8 week program. No one is qualified to actually help women to figure out WHY we are doing the drinking or drugging (which is unique to all of us), and that is the single most important ingredient towards actual sobriety. It is merely a detox and weight gain program, not nearly long enough to return to the circumstances which most of us left. We were put to work as the maid service to the whole compound, were not allowed ANY access to the cozy looking rooms with sofas and wing back chairs shown in the pictures and MONITORED for 1 cup of coffee/day. (If my new drug were coffee, maybe i\'da stayed away from alcohol...) Not allowed by my building Group Leader to use brush teeth or even use the bathroom before the Group morning prayer ritual. Our days were lived out in a classroom with occasional discussions held in the finished basement area. Sometimes outside church types would come in and minister to us, that was cute but wholly ineffective for a real-life-change. Many of the enrollees are avoiding jail, and are therefore not serious. For the cost, which I think is twice what it\'s worth, look around some more.

Started out great, but the backstabbing and lies along with unqualified counselors make this a FARCE.

My experience at heart ministries was truly my saving grace. I found the love and support that I needed with other women who could relate to what I was going through without judgement. My relationship with God grew tremendously and I learned how to live a healthy sober life while having fun and making new friends that I still stay in contact with even after leaving. The program gives you a good sense of living in a healthy community and discipline. To take responsibility for your own actions and to realize that there are always consequences if you do something wrong. You fight past not only your addiction but other deep matters that may have caused your addiction or create other personality defects in your life. Amazing program with amazing people.
