Phoenix House is a nonprofit organization with 11 locations across the country. Located in New England’s Monadnock Region, the facility in Keene, N.H. offers residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders. Medically-assisted detoxification is available on-site. Phoenix House of Keene is one of only 17 residential, non-hospital facilities in the state of New Hampshire.

According to the facility's website, treatment at Phoenix House in Keene is evidence-based and individualized. While the length of stay in the residential program varies, the program is primarily designed for short-term stays.

Clients receive psychiatric and medication evaluations, if necessary, and participate in individual and group counseling. They are encouraged to attend on- and off-site 12-step meetings, but it is not a mandatory part of treatment.

Outpatient options include a partial hospitalization program (PHP), which offers a full week of programming four to six hours a day, as well as an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that meets three hours per day, three days a week.

During treatment, family members are asked to attend at least one counselor-facilitated family session with their loved one, in addition to at least one family education group. Additionally, all clients receive a comprehensive aftercare plan upon discharge, which is designed by the client and their primary counselor.

A psychiatrist, a psychiatric nurse, and a number of medical consultants are available on as-needed basis. My counselor was open and flexible to alternative paths of recovery. Woefully understaffef. Classes, groups and outings often cancelled.

Staff seemed to have lost total control of clients. Knew it would not help. Also had to move to a different room frequently...very disruptive for me. Being older, felt very isolated being with 20 year olds

I was thankful that we were in groups all day leaving little down time. It helped me get out of my head. I needed more mental health treatment along with addiction treatment and I didn't really get that. Phoenix House definitely saved my life and I have been clean since. When I interviewed I asked about intensive mental health treatment or grief counseling and was told I'd be able to do that. Once getting there I asked a few times and it didn't end up happening for me. I do understand the number of clients and how hard it is to accommodate for each person. I also had a hard time finding a transitional living facility or sober house to go to and didn't receive much guidance around it. I was told to do it on my own but didn't have access to a computer to research options.
