Phoenix Recovery Center Philosophy

At Phoenix Recovery Center, individuals are given the opportunity to garner the necessary tools to promote personal growth and enduring recovery from substance abuse and addiction. Therapies aim to treat the individual as a holistic whole, utilizing approaches such as guided meditation, walking groups, family education, group counseling, and even Nintendo Wii Therapy to provide clients with a well-rounded foundation for lasting sobriety.

Areas of Specialization

  • Family Programs
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

  • Client & Family Support Groups
Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.

ABOUT PHOENIX RECOVERY CENTER

Founded in 2002 and located 30 miles northeast of Baltimore in northeastern Maryland, state-licensed Phoenix Recovery Center (PRC) offers residential treatment for adults who are struggling with substance abuse. If necessary, medically-supervised detox is available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with an assessment of the individual’s psychiatric, medical, and substance abuse history, and a physical.

Group therapy is the primary treatment modality with individual sessions as needed, and gender-specific groups are offered. Programs also include educational lectures, relapse prevention work, introductions to 12-step programs, and, for loved ones, a family education program. Holistic and alternative therapies include acupuncture, acudetox, guided meditation, walking groups, aromatherapy, Nintendo Wii therapy, canine therapy, and drum therapy.

A dedicated four-week family program educates loved ones on the disease of addiction. The facility employs continuing care coordinators to ensure that all clients leave with a comprehensive aftercare program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to PRC’s website, staff includes a board-certified addictionologist, registered nurses, licensed addiction counselors, and clinical program assistants. The four individuals polled on the staff’s level of training and experience at the time of this writing gave it an average rating of 3.75 out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Accommodations at PRC include semi-private bedrooms equipped with bathrooms, complete dining facilities, a comfortable community room, and separate male and female laundry rooms. The facility also offers a wide range of recreational activities, such as basketball, horseshoes, volleyball, and Wii sports. The four reviewers polled on the facility’s cleanliness gave it an average rating of 3.5 stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com received reviews from eight alumni, seven of whom gave mostly positive feedback. The five reviewers polled on a variety of treatment aspects awarded the facility 3.4 out of five stars for its holistic offerings and the three alumni polled on exercise and leisure activities gave four out of five stars. In addition, the two alumni surveyed on staff support gave perfect five-star ratings. Several alumni left only positive commentary on staff. “I loved this place especially the staff! The dedicate themselves for each client. Theyou actually listen to you,” Lisa wrote.

Comments from alumni did not reveal any repeated criticisms. One anonymous reviewer disagreed with other alumni concerning staff, writing: “It didn't have the best staff.” Others complained about the higher number of smoke breaks, young client base, and bad communication. The four alumni surveyed on the program’s policy on connection with those outside the facility gave a 2.5-star average.

On Facebook, the facility has a 4.5-star average rating based on 11 reviews.[1] Several reviewers credited PRC with saving their lives, such as Alyssa who wrote: “Amazing place! prc saved my life ! and i would go back in hearbeat because i met people i will never forget!” However, Mikee wrote on Facebook: “The place would be better if it had more activities the basket ball hoop isnt enough.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The three loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave mostly positive feedback. Barbara, a mother of a PRC client, said she would recommend the facility, awarding it five stars for its treatment effectiveness, as well as for its staff support, counseling, leadership, and addiction treatment. Another reviewer, J.L.D., whose son was in the facility at the time of the review, wrote: “I wish i would have found this place 9 yrs ago for my son they are awesome this is one of the best rehabs in maryland.”

A third loved one surveyed gave four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, counseling options, and staff level of experience. The anonymous loved one did, however, feel cleanliness and holistic options could be improved.

While family members typically provided positive feedback, a loved one named Holly wrote on Facebook that treatment at this facility wasn’t beneficial for her husband. “There are not enough activities, he didn't get his mail and his medicines where usually late or delayed,” she wrote.

FINANCING

According to its website, PRC accepts most insurance policies as well as self-pay. The four reviewers polled on the facility’s affordability at the time of this writing gave it a 4.25-star average rating.

They tend to think that limiting communication with a loved one that's in rehab is beneficial. What I found with my loved one is that it creates stress, anxiety and an unknown about what's happening on the outside world. Obviously there's things that caused my loved one to use in the outside world but the use started before we met. It was only after we met that my loved one decided to seek treatment. Obviously I can't say my loved one is doing it for me because that would be all the wrong reasons. They limit the amount of letters they're allowed to receive and the length of the letters even though nothing the letters is bad it's all loving and caring. Their professionalism is horrible. They don't communicate with anybody on the outside that has somebody in there. When they take their clients out for doctor's appointments their CPAs use their cell phones while driving. Their family program is non-existent even though they say it's one of the best. I have yet to have a meeting scheduled with the counselor and my loved one to ensure that the exit strategy is in place and they have a path forward that we all agree with and will stick to. All in all this place causes more stress then it needs to by limiting families involvement with their loved ones recovery.

I loved this place especially the staff! The dedicate themselves for each client. Theyou actually listen to you. They tell you the truth. There is no sugar coating it. The food is great. The cook is accommodating and goes out of her to go the extra mile on her own time. And is very nice. I was a hard case aND had a ton of problems. My counselor had compassion, dedication, and was honest with me. They prepare you for the reality of living life through hard times. Believe it or not I laughed and cried a lot. They make it fun! They also have a half hour of exercise every morning and meditation with acupuncture every afternoon. No snoring tho!!! They also make sure you have a plan when you leave. They help you with half way housed or whatever you needs are. Thank you Phoenix!

My son was given Phoenix as one of several recommended facilities by a counselor. This was the most economical and he had sever discussions with the director. Each participant had a roommate, daily jobs and was provided with nutritionally sound meals. After 3 days of medically supervised detox, he began counseling, both individual and group. Through another participant he found a halfway house in Sarasota, because I refused to let him come home (back to the same environment). It's now been more than a year and he seems to be doing great>

The groups (inside and outside) were great.A whole lot of smoke breaks - nicotine addiction increased while here. Demographics were a lot of young people, not so many my age.
