Areas of Specialization
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
The focus of cognitive behavioral therapy (also called CBT) is helping people to understand the thoughts and emotions that underlie their addiction with the goal of learning new, healthier and more productive ways to understand and express themselves.
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

ABOUT PHOENIX RECOVERY PROGRAMS — MANKATO, MN
Phoenix Recovery Programs is a private nonprofit organization that provides residential and outpatient treatment for adolescents and young adults who are struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis. Residential treatment is offered at four gender-separate facilities. The Mankato office, located in the center of the city in southern Minnesota, provides outpatient treatment only for clients up to age 19.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Phoenix Recovery Programs uses the symbol of the phoenix to represent being reborn from addiction. It ascribes to the notion that those in the cycle of substance abuse can build a new life with the proper tools and assistance. The organization nevertheless accepts that addiction is a chronic disease, and that relapse is sometimes part of the recovery process. As such, the facility always welcomes back former clients who have relapsed since completing treatment.
The center’s abstinence-based treatment approach is based on the 12-Steps, supplemented by evidence-based modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement therapy (MET), plus education on health (e.g., diet, exercise, and nutrition suggestions), family dynamics, and goal setting.
Licensed counselors provide group and individual therapy sessions to address issues that include continued recovery, relapse prevention and living issues, such as anger, sexuality, and feelings. The center urges families to get involved in the treatment process.
In the Mankato office outpatient program (OP), clients attend school on-site from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. under the auspices of the local school district and then go to lunch and the community center. They participate in therapy groups in the afternoon. The OP is a 90-day cycle.
Professional staff at the Phoenix Recovery Programs Mankato office includes a psychologist, licensed addiction counselors, mental health therapists, social workers, teacher, and program and residence directors and managers.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The Mankato office opened in 2008. It occupies two floors of a small brick office complex with an ample parking lot off a tree-lined street. The facility is in downtown Mankato near public transportation.
Photos on the Phoenix Recovery Program website show a well-lighted reception area, kitchen with a roundtable setup for lunch, a large group meeting room, and individual consultation rooms. All of the facilities in the network are tobacco free for clients, staff, and visitors.

In the most detailed review provided, a former employee at the White Bear Lake location wrote: “The most enjoyable part of the job was being responsible for 8 adolescents and watching them grow and mature on a daily basis. There is almost nothing comparable to seeing a new light starting to grow and shine in a client's eyes.”
