Located in northern Iowa and founded in 1969, Prairie Ridge addiction treatment center offers residential substance abuse treatment for adult men and women. The average length of stay is 28 days, and all residential programs and living arrangements are gender-specific. Detox services are not available on-site.

Upon intake, clients are evaluated to ensure they meet the criteria for residential treatment as outlined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Clients then receive a minimum of 50 hours of therapy per week, which includes group, individual, and family therapy. Group workshops focus on topics like relapse prevention, trigger recognition and management, tools for dealing with cravings, and the adoption of healthy, sober activities. The facility has specialized programming for gambling addictions and for women with children.

The facility's full-day intensive outpatient program (IOP) runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are evening and weekend sessions available for those who work during the day. Outpatient programs are also encouraged, and residential graduates will often use Prairie Ridge’s outpatient services as a form of aftercare.

The facility’s program model combines 12-step methodology with a number of evidenced-based approaches, including The Matrix Model and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are held on-site, although attendance is not mandatory, and residents can participate in 12-step meetings off campus as well.

The use of cell phones is limited to ten minutes during allotted time sessions, and family visitation is specified as Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The treatment team includes certified addiction counselors, certified alcohol and drug counselors, and licensed clinical social workers.

The residences for both men and women are simple and dorm-like, offering double-occupancy rooms and lounges with TVs, computer stations, and fitness facilities. According to the facility’s website, it has a quarter mile walking trail through grass and flowers. Prairie Ridge is tobacco-free facility. Nicotine cessation classes are offered for clients struggling to quit.

The sole alum who submitted feedback to at the time of this writing gave a generally positive review. This individual awarded perfect five-star ratings to the meals and nutrition, the level of staff support, the level of connectivity during treatment, the visitor policy, and the quality of individual treatment. Four-star ratings were given for the accommodations and amenities and the cleanliness of Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare.

This anonymous alum remarked upon their experience: "They focus on three different groups of recovery. DBT, Matrix and twelve step. Those combined with psychiatrist on staff armed me with all the tools I'll need."

Reviews left on Google are extremely mixed, where three stars is the average from nine respondents to date.[1] A few five-star reviewers credited this facility with saving their lives; however, a few one-star reviewers expressed that their needs were not met.

Of the six loved ones who left reviews for at the time of the writing, five gave positive reviews. The five loved ones who were polled on the following metrics gave average ratings of 4.2 out of five stars for cleanliness; four stars for the staff's level of training and experience; 3.8 stars for the level of family participation during treatment; 3.6 stars for exercise and leisure offerings; and 3.2 stars for the level of connectivity during treatment and the visitor policy. When asked, on a scale from one to five, whether they would recommend treatment at Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare, the five respondents gave an average rating of 3.8.

The single loved one to leave a negative review indicated that they wouldn’t recommend the facility. “If you tell them you are not ready to leave and believe that if you do you will go right back to your old ways, they should take that into consideration,” they wrote. “Not tell you, sorry this is all we can offer you, time to leave.”

Prairie Ridge accepts most insurance plans and Medicaid reimbursements. The facility also offers a sliding scale fee to Iowa residents.

Prairie Ridge in Mason City is a privately owned company that must be making quite a profit. Is the service they say they provide effective? I doubt it. I have known people who have used their services for the past 30 years. Not once was the treatment they offered effective. Not once. They are there to make money. Send your loved ones to a legit treatment facility if you really want them to be healthy. Even facilities that are for profit can be legit. Not prairie ridge. They are the only choice of facility in this area. If they had competition, they would no longer exist because they are a money making business only. They are fake.

Was a wonderful place. All the CA's are amazing. I just wish there was dental help. I'm upset and down on myself that I couldn't get dental help. I had to leave a week early.

The program needs to be longer for some than others. I would not recommend this place. If you tell them you are not ready to leave and believe that if you do you will go right back to your old ways, they should take that into consideration. Not tell you, sorry this is all we can offer you, time to leave.

I have heard from others in town that Prairie Ridge does a good job working with the rehab patients and their families, I have experience with the type of facility, and think they do a good job working with the families. They make people feel welcome and help them on their journey to quit addiction. They have staff that cares about patients and families. They are able to serve different needs and accommodate people while they quit smoking, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, etc. However, they need more doctors.

My son is alcohol free, not 100% sure if it was the treatment or the fact that he almost died twice before going into treatment, from seizures and kidneys shutting down. Also he recommitted his life to Jesus and I feel that has a lot to do with him doing so well. I did not have much involvement in the process.

My son is now doing awesome. I am not sure what the exact strengths are because my son did not let us be involved too much.

They focus on three different groups of recovery. DBT, Matrix and twelve step. Those combined with psychiatrist on staff armed me with all the tools I'll need. They meet all my needs regarding both education and mental health. Most of the staff are in recovery themselves. They bring many different angles for managing this disease.
