ABOUT PREFERRED FAMILY HEALTHCARE - WINFIELD
Preferred Family Healthcare is a community-based health care organization that offers a range of treatment services through its over 145 locations. The organization’s Winfield, Mo. facility, located 46 miles north of St. Louis, provides a full continuum of treatment programs for adolescents struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health concerns. The Winfield facility, known as the Farm, provides long-term residential, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and outpatient programs for adolescents (ages 13 to 19). Medical detoxification services are not available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission into the program, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse assessment to determine an appropriate level of care. Adolescents who require a structured, supervised environment to acquire and sustain sobriety may be referred to the Farm’s residential program. While the length of residential treatment is determined by the client’s progress, the minimum recommended stay is 60 days.
A therapeutic community model of treatment, the Farm’s programming utilizes a range of evidence-based treatment modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI), in conjunction with 12-step immersion and experiential therapies to promote healthy lifestyle changes.
During residential treatment, residents participate in weekly individual therapy sessions and daily group counseling to identify issues that may contribute to destructive behavior and set attainable recovery goals. Family counseling may also be incorporated into treatment. The facility also provides 12-Step Facilitation Therapy, which may include attending 12-step meetings and performing associated “step-work.” Residents with co-occurring mental health concerns may also receive ongoing psychiatric evaluations and medication management.
In addition to counseling sessions, residents attend educational classes on a range of life skills, such as obtaining a job, budgeting, and located housing. An accredited, on-site school, the Farm School, also allows residents to earn credits towards graduation during treatment, and G.E.D. preparation classes are available.
Along with core programming, The Farm offers a range of experiential and holistic therapy options for residents, including equine therapy, music therapy, therapeutic recreation, and wilderness excursions. Residents also perform farm-related duties during treatment, which may include land management, gardening, and animal care.
Once a resident completes residential treatment, clinicians may encourage clients to utilize the Farm’s partial hospitalization program (PHP) or outpatient program as a “step-down” aftercare service. Clinicians also help graduates to locate community-based resources and other transitional options that support ongoing recovery.
CARF-accredited, the Farm employs a multidisciplinary team comprised of psychiatrists, substance abuse counselors, community support specialists, accredited teachers, peer specialists, nurses, equine therapists, and behavioral health technicians.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
While specific information concerning the Farm’s accommodations and amenities is limited, the facility’s website describes the Farm as an “unique rural treatment environment.” During residential treatment, residents are responsible for service projects, household chores, and farm-related duties.
