ABOUT PROJECT REALITY
Project Reality is one of Utah’s 58 (24.3 percent) private, nonprofit substance abuse treatment organizations and has been providing drug addiction treatment and prevention services since 1970. Two facilities, one each in Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah, offer treatments primarily for opioid abuse and dependency. The Salt Lake City program is located in a business neighborhood on the same block as the Utah Department of Workforce Services and also operates a drug testing laboratory on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Walk-in and phone screenings are available for clients who want to participate in a Project Reality opioid use treatment program. Substance abuse is treated as a disease with biological, psychological, and social effects. The facility provides mental health and addiction counseling in conjunction with medication-assisted therapy (MAT). MAT involves ongoing psychiatric and physical assessments, lab work, and medication dispensing and monitoring. In Utah, only 14 (1.1 percent) of facilities offer MAT programs.
Integrated treatment programs incorporate evidence-based therapies designed to assist clients in achieving improved health and independent living. Methadone and Suboxone maintenance and detoxification services are all offered, along with individual, group, family, and couples counseling.
Project Reality’s prevention program focuses on supporting families that may be at risk for substance abuse and its related consequences and circumstances, including illegal activity.
The center also offers case management, various community outreach activities, and is one of only 41 (17.2 percent) of treatment facilities in Utah that offer HIV testing.
The treatment program consists of board-certified physicians, experienced psychotherapists, case managers, licensed substance abuse counselors, and licensed practical and advanced practice nurses. It is one of the 17 (7.1 percent) of Utah facilities that are CARF-accredited.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com received a survey response from a single alum of Project Reality who wrote that the facility provided a “hard but fair program.” Asked to rate on a scale of one to five the effectiveness of treatment and the availability of counseling options, they awarded four stars for each. They gave just three stars for the staff’s experience and training.
Reviews from secondary sources at the time of this writing expressed different opinions. Based on 17 ratings on Google to date, the facility has earned 3.9 out of five stars. Several claimed that the facility saved their lives, thanked various staff for their aid, and described the program and its staff as “Very helpful.” "Compared to other methadone treatment centers, this one SUCKS. The only perk is that they have county funding. Other than that, this place is a complete joke," Sammie wrote in a one-star review.
On YellowPages.com, an anonymous alum gave a two out of five star review and asserted that “My counselor/ therapist had a sexual affair with me.”
WHAT STAFF SAY
At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has not received any staff reviews about Project Reality. On Indeed, Project Reality has a 3.8 out of five star rating from five reviews to date. Although staff members noted a lack of “breaks or lunches”, they provided positive feedback about coworkers and management. On Glassdoor, a single current employee left a four out of five star review.
Project Reality receives funding from county governments and the United Way and offers a sliding fee scale for services. Self-pay, private insurance, and Medicaid are accepted.
