ABOUT MERCY MEDICAL CENTER - PROVIDENCE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH HOSPITAL IN HOLYOKE, MA
A part of the Mercy Medical Center network, the largest provider of behavioral health services in western Massachusetts, Providence Behavioral Health Hospital provides inpatient, outpatient, and detoxification treatment services for individuals of all ages facing acute psychiatric and/or substance use issues in Holyoke, Mass., just north of Springfield.
Relative to other facilities in the state, Providence Behavioral Health Hospital runs one of just 25 (7.1 percent) of hospital-based treatment programs and one of just 34 (9.7 percent) of hospital-based detox programs.
Mercy Medical Center is operated by Trinity Health of New England.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Providence Behavioral Health Hospital is open 24 hours a day for new admissions. Acute care typically lasts from four to seven days, though it can run shorter or longer if needed. In addition to a traditional outpatient program, the hospital runs Pathways, an intensive outpatient (IOP) that meets three to five times per week. There’s also a methadone maintenance program for clients struggling with an opioid addiction.
Typically, clients adhere to a comprehensive program that includes daily individual and group counseling, medical evaluations and treatment, laboratory and toxicology testing, addiction education, case management, referrals, and support. Those experiencing withdrawal symptoms may receive medication during treatment.
For clients who’ve completed treatment, aftercare planning is available along with referrals to community-based outpatient services.
The treatment team at Providence Behavioral Health Hospital includes medical doctors, registered nurses, and master's level clinicians.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Providence Behavioral Health Hospital offers 104 beds for children, teens, adults, and senior adults in a hospital setting. Additional details regarding the facility’s living arrangements and related offerings are not provided, however, four of the five alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave the hospital either four or five out of five stars for its accommodations and amenities.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Alumni response is mostly positive, with some exceptions. Of the five alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, just three indicated that they’d recommend the program to others. Still, as a collective, the five approved of most other areas:

Regarding the facility’s strengths, alumni pointed towards a “great” staff and the spiritual parts of the program: “I felt safe and informed,” one alum wrote. “This is where I began my journey into sobriety, and helped me build a solid foundation.” Alumni were generally less appreciative of the exercise/leisure and holistic options, one alum claiming outright that there were “no physical activities” during their time here.
On a more balanced note, another alum commented, “Only a person that wants to get clean will get clean, the person that goes there because he was mandated will not get clean.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The sole family member polled by Rehabs.com to date, a parent, had generally positive feedback on their son’s experience here. The anonymous reviewer gave just two out of five stars for family participation and connectivity, but five out of five stars for areas like treatment effectiveness, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and staff training and experience.
“Providence catholic hospital has been taking care of addicts for decades especially when no one else would,let's be thankful to those wonderful people that help change people's lives for the better,” they wrote.
Providence Behavioral Health Hospital is one of 253 (72.1 percent) of Massachusetts facilities that accepts private health insurance; it’s also one of 203 (57.8 percent) that accepts Medicare and one of 263 (74.9 percent) that accepts Medicaid.
