RBHA - Women's Treatment Center Philosophy
The Rubicon Women’s Treatment Community provides gender-specific substance abuse treatment services for women. Treatment options follow a therapeutic community model. Services include medical and social detoxification, short- and long-term residential programs, and intensive outpatient care. A specialized program for women with children allows mothers to bring as many as three children for up to six months.
Areas of Specialization
This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.

RBHA – WOMEN’S TREATMENT CENTER
Licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, Richmond Behavioral Health Authority (RBHA) provides a variety of behavioral and mental health services for the community of Richmond, Va. The organization’s North Campus location is home to the Women’s Treatment Center, which offers residential treatment and outpatient (OP) care for women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The facility also provides specialized care for pregnant and parenting women.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
To ensure clients receive the most appropriate forms of treatment, RBHA provides initial screenings and assessments, both of which may be expedited for pregnant women. According to the center’s website, a management program is available to clients experiencing symptoms of withdrawal.
Clients who require a high level of structure and guidance may be referred to the organization’s residential program, which includes case management services, individual counseling, psychiatric services, group therapy, and integrated primary care. The facility also provides transportation, childcare, developmental screenings for children, and family activities.
The center’s OP program may be used as a stand-alone or step-down treatment option. Women-only groups cover a variety of topics, including trauma, co-occurring disorders, parenting, and general life skills.
According to RBHA’s website, the center employs a team of healthcare professionals specializing in case management and substance abuse counseling.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
In 2015, RBHA acquired a residential facility formerly owned by the nonprofit Rubicon. The facility includes a multi-purpose gymnasium and a child activity center. According to RBHA’s website, the multi-building facility, now known as the North Campus, is currently under renovation. Once complete, it will accommodate multiple programs, including the organization’s program for men, and up to 182 individuals.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided mixed reviews. Angela gave the program’s treatment effectiveness a rating of two out of five stars and noted the center’s lack of adequate staffing. “Not enough counseling 1 on 1..more informative groups needed,” she wrote. She also felt that meals were not nutritious and that clients did not get enough physical activity.
The two other surveyed alumni were more satisfied with their treatment. One anonymous alum praised the “very nice program” and noted that she would recommend it to others. S.S. gave the program’s treatment effectiveness five out of five stars, noting that children were allowed to attend the program with their mothers.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The one loved one who provided feedback to Rehabs.com emphasized individualized treatment plans and support for community integration as strengths. However, the same survey respondent felt that the center’s communication with family members was a weakness.
There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs. However, RBHA is a government-funded organization that aims to provide affordable health care.
