ABOUT RENOVATION HOUSE
Renovation House is a faith-based treatment facility for adults struggling with substance use disorder. Located across from Staten Island in Perth Amboy, N.J, the facility provides long-term residential treatment to adult men. It's one of 195 substance abuse treatment facilities in New Jersey (57 percent) to provide specialized treatment for men.
The facility is not equipped to treat those with co-occurring disorders and does not allow psychiatric medications. Detox is not provided on-site, but is required prior to admission.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Renovation House is one of 38 substance abuse treatment facilities in New Jersey (just 11 percent) to offer residential treatment that lasts longer than 30 days. Treatment typically lasts 12 months.
Designed to address emotional, physical, and spiritual issues that contribute to substance abuse behaviors, the program is grounded in Biblical principles. Clients participate in up to six hours a day of spiritual devotion, Bible study, and group prayer. Treatment also includes chapel service, educational speakers, and discussion groups. GED and college classes are also available to clients.
The program is broken up into two stages. During the first nine months, clients live at the facility while participating in weekly individual counseling sessions. For the last three months, clients move into transitional housing and connect with community-based religious and sober living services They also take on jobs, with the aid of vocational therapy and training. In 2017, less than half (43 percent) of substance abuse treatment facilities in New Jersey provided its clients with employment counseling or training.
The team at Renovation House consists of qualified and experienced ministers with experience working with clients in rehabilitation facilities. Graduates of the program are also involved in the treatment and facilities management aspects of the program.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
According to the facility's website, the program can accommodate up to 44 men, and residents can play in a softball league and attend social events during treatment. The one individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility two out of five stars for its exercise and leisure activities, three out of five stars for its cleanliness, and five out of five stars for its holistic offerings.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
While Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, Renovation House earned an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars based on 11 Google reviews and a five out of five-star rating based on the opinions of four individuals on Facebook, which the facility may manage. Former clients who left comments described the ministry as a helpful and healing place for both worship and rehabilitation. "This place has truly been a blessing to me and my family," Julio wrote in a representative review on Google. "The people are amazing and what this church is doing is also amazing."
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, an extended family member of a former client, gave Renovation House mixed feedback. On the positive side, they awarded the facility four or five out of five stars for its counseling options, its staff support, its pricing, and the strength of its leadership. However, they also gave the ministry just one out of five stars for its family involvement and three stars for the overall quality of its mental health and addiction treatment. “This is a faith-based program (Christian) and assumes that the Lord is the healer,” they wrote.
There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs, but it does state that all clients will be accepted regardless of their financial situation. Therefore, financial assistance may be available to those that qualify. The program is also supported by donations and fundraisers.
