Richmond State Hospital in northwestern Indiana is a state-operated behavioral health facility serving adult and geriatric populations from across the state. It provides a quiet and peaceful inpatient recovery environment for people struggling with psychiatric disorders and/or substance abuse issues.

All incoming patients are screened at a Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) prior to admission.

Richmond State Hospital is a federally funded facility that strives to provide individualized, holistic healthcare. The hospital offers three specialized “service lines” to best address the varying needs of its clients. There is the Hope and Recovery Service Line, which is the most intensive of the residential programs, the Recovery and Transition Service Line, which is designed to promote independence and reintegration into the community, and the Integrated Dual Diagnosis Recovery Service Line, which is for individuals with co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders.

All programs include individual and group therapy, client and family education, art and recreational therapy, and specialized groups focusing on women’s issues and anger management.

The staff at Richmond State Hospital includes physicians, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, activity therapists, behavioral healthcare recovery assistants, and substance abuse counselors.

The accommodations vary depending on the service line, but all are co-ed. The Hope and Recovery program consists of two 32-bed units. The dual diagnosis program also has two units, each of which has 30 beds. These four units are situated within the Residential Treatment Center (RTC), which has a dining room, a canteen, a beauty/barber shop, whirlpool baths, and more.

The Recovery and Transition Service Line houses clients in an intimate, unlocked, six-bed home located on the hospital’s property, called Darby House.

Steve, the only former patient currently surveyed by, gave his overall treatment effectiveness of five out of five stars. He assigned the hospital five-star ratings for meals and nutrition, the staff’s availability and training, the quality of his individual counseling, the quality of group counseling, the frequency of counseling, and staff support, but provided lower ratings for holistic offerings, leisure activities, and exercise. He also noted that the program in which he participated is no longer offered at the facility.

The hospital received more lukewarm reviews from the three anonymous loved ones polled by to date. Loved ones gave high marks for family participation and affordability, along with four- and five-star ratings for counseling options. The two loved ones polled on a scale from one to five on whether they would recommend treatment at Richmond State Hospital to others each gave 3-star ratings. The third loved one simply indicated that they would, indeed, recommend the facility.

Multiple respondents reported that the staff were not kind. As one wrote to “Staff is not friendly and not trained well.”

One anonymous loved one, however, rated Richmond State Hospital’s treatment effectiveness an overall rating of five stars and told “My son became healthier mentally and physcially.”

There is currently no specific information available on pricing via the facility's website. According to HealthGrove, Richmond State Hospital accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and most private insurance plans. It also offers sliding scale fees to clients who qualify.
