Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Located in Hampton, Va., on the Virginia Peninsula, Riverside Behavioral Health Center (BHC) offers short-term, hospital-based psychiatric and substance abuse treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. Individuals who have received a dual diagnosis of addiction and mental health disorders can receive treatment, and medically managed detox services are provided on-site.

Adult treatment programs are geared for men and women who require immediate care and intervention. To be admitted, patients struggling with addiction must be experiencing withdrawal symptoms or significant mental or physical effects from excessive drug or alcohol use. The intake process can begin with a phone call or on-site evaluation. The treatment team then puts together an individualized plan focused on medical care and stabilization.

Acute services are also offered to teens and children, and a long-term residential program is available for adolescents ages 12 to 17. Education is provided through Riverside Academy, which is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education.

The facility’s interdisciplinary staff includes six board certified psychiatrists and master’s level nurses. Pastoral care is provided by a staff member, and at least one medical team member is bilingual in Spanish. Another has experience working with medication-assisted therapy.

The Behavioral Health Center is one of about 10 Riverside hospitals in the region. The program takes pride in a semi-monthly therapy dog visitation program. No other information regarding living arrangements or related offerings is provided by the facility.

However, two of three family members polled by Rehabs.com provided favorable reviews of the facility’s cleanliness and maintenance and of opportunities for exercise and leisure activities. Meals and nutrition received two lower ratings. In written comments, one identified “not enough outside space” as a weakness and another noted that the building could use updating.

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any feedback from former clients of Riverside BHC at the time of this writing, five Google reviews revealed a trend toward generally critical opinions. In a representative review, one alum described the setting as like “imprisonment,” citing “steel locked doors,” no access to outside activities, disrespectful staff, and poor communication. The five reviews had an average rating of just 2.2 out of five stars. Positive comments referenced food and staff.[1]

The three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com identified several common strengths in the facility, but were split regarding their likelihood to recommend BHC to others. Two cited counseling as strengths and the third wrote that the treatment “helped [their] daughter.” All three also gave ratings of four or five stars for the effectiveness of treatment, the level of staff training and experience, and the admissions and discharge procedures.

Two of the three also rated opportunities for family participation in treatment and for the program’s affordability highly, while the third gave these aspects each just two stars.

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any feedback from former or current employees, nine Indeed reviews indicated that the staff is committed and collaborative. A few noted inconsistency in procedures and the quality of staff, but most described a positive work experience.[2]

A local newspaper story from February 2016 reported that Riverside Behavioral Health Center discontinued providing outpatient services, with the intent to increase inpatient care. Some individual doctors continue to work with patients on an outpatient basis.

According to the facility’s website, most insurance plans are accepted, including Medicaid and Medicare. Patients may also pay directly, and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

Counseling was good, the facility itself needs improvement. It was close proximity, only one we could afford, but definitely not the best.
