Riverside Behavioral Health Center (BHC), in Hampton, Va., offers short-term, hospital-based psychiatric and substance abuse treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. The facility treats individuals with dual diagnoses and co-occurring mental health disorders. Counselor at this facility also offer confidential referral assistance.

Adult treatment programs are geared for men and women who require immediate care and intervention. Acute services are also offered to teens and children, and a long-term residential program is available for adolescents ages 12 to 17. The intake process, which is available 24 hours a day, can begin with a phone call or an on-site evaluation. Patients struggling with addiction must be experiencing withdrawal symptoms or significant mental or physical effects from excessive drug or alcohol use.

Medically managed detox services are provided on-site, making it one of 29 facilities across the state to offer this as a component of treatment. The treatment team then puts together an individualized plan focused on medical care and stabilization.

Adult programming consists of crisis intervention, intensive treatment program (ITP), adult psychiatric services (APS), inpatient detoxification services, and dual diagnosis services. Education is provided through Riverside Academy, which is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education.

The facility boasts six psychiatrists, and the interdisciplinary staff includes and master’s level nurses. There are also licensed social workers on staff, and pastoral care is provided by a staff member. The facility notes on its website that it offers services in Spanish.

The Behavioral Health Center is one of around 10 Riverside hospitals in the region. No other information regarding living arrangements or related offerings is provided by the facility, but a photo seems to show a modern building surrounded by foliage. The program offers a semi-monthly pet visitation program, which the website says helps to stabilize clients both physically and mentally. It also has a telehealth video series.

Two of three family members polled by Rehabs.com provided favorable reviews of the facility’s cleanliness and maintenance and of opportunities for exercise and leisure activities. Meals and nutrition received two lower ratings. In written comments, one suggest there was “not enough outside space” while another noted that the building could use updating.

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any feedback from former clients of Riverside BHC.

Secondary sites like Google reveal extremely negative reviews from 15 alums who gave an average rating of 1.6 stars.[1] Positive comments referenced food and staff In a representative review. However, one alum described the setting as “imprisonment,” with “steel locked doors,” no access to outside activities, disrespectful staff, and a lack of communication..

The three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com identified several common strengths in the facility, but were split regarding their likelihood to recommend BHC to others. Two praised staff and counseling as strengths. The third wrote that the treatment “helped (their) daughter.” Another praised the counseling, but wrote, “The treatment was reliable and would help some unfortunately my family member was not one of them.”

All three also gave ratings of four or five stars for the effectiveness of treatment, the level of staff and experience, and the admissions and discharge procedures. Two of the three also rated opportunities for family participation in treatment and for the program’s affordability highly, while the third gave these categories each only two stars.

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any feedback from former or current employees, 16 Indeed reviews offered mixed ratings about Riverside, offering and average of 3.1 stars.[2] Majority of the positive comments were regarding patient interaction. Negative reviews typically centered on management and the hospital system at-large rather than the behavioral health center.

According to the facility’s website, the facility accepts most major private insurnaces plans, Medicare (accepted by about 50 percent of Virginia facilities), and Medicaid (accepted at 59 percent of Virginia facilities). Patients may also pay directly, and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

Counseling was good, the facility itself needs improvement. It was close proximity, only one we could afford, but definitely not the best.
