ABOUT RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER – ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAM

Riverview Medical Center, part of Hackensack Meridian Health, is an acute-care community hospital located in Red Bank, N.J. In addition to general medical services, the organization provides a small inpatient program for addiction recovery services and operates a nearby behavioral health facility that offers outpatient care for adults struggling with substance abuse. Included in these outpatient services is a dedicated driving while intoxicated (DWI) program for offenders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Riverview Medical Center’s website, its addiction recovery program delivers services to adults primarily in an outpatient setting. Options include an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and continuing care program for those in early recovery. Families are encouraged to attend treatment, and offerings include family education and co-dependency counseling. The DWI education group lasts 16 weeks. Individual, family, group, and activity therapies also are available to adolescents ages 13 to 17 on an outpatient basis.

There is a short-term 30-bed inpatient unit for adults needing psychiatric and/or substance abuse care, but it’s unclear whether it also provides medical detoxification. The program offers individual, group, and family therapy and the average inpatient stay is eight days.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, the multidisciplinary behavioral health treatment team includes psychiatrists, registered nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, master’s-level therapists, substance abuse staff, and other medical personnel.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients attend the addiction recovery program’s outpatient services at Booker Behavioral Health Center, located on a tree-lined street with ample parking in Shrewsbury, N.J. Riverview Medical Center’s website does not include details on accommodations in its inpatient behavioral health unit, however, patients can expect a clinical atmosphere. Riverview Medical Center operates a smoke-free campus. Five individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com on the facility’s accommodations to date awarded this metric an average of 3.4 out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At time of writing, Rehabs.com polled three alumni of Riverview Medical Center’s addiction recovery program, who provided split feedback -- two positive and one negative impressions. However, all alumni gave high ratings for the staff's level of training and experience, with each alum giving either a four- or five-star ratings for the metric. “The staff were incredible to work with and were very helpful,” wrote an anonymous alum, who offered a perfect five stars for treatment effectiveness. Commenting on the program as a whole, R.L.K. wrote “Worked for me.”

The negative reviewer indicated their psychiatric problems were not addressed through the program. “Was not good experiences for me I suffered from depression and anxiety...I started to get worse had to be discharged after 2 dsys,” an anonymous reviewer wrote. Alumni also were divided on holistic offerings and family participation. Although one former client gave four out of five stars for both, two others rated these metrics one and two stars.

Feedback on secondary sources is mixed. On Google, three reviews of Riverview Medical Center’s behavioral health services to date yielded an average of two out of five stars -- two one-star ratings and one four-star.[1] Representative reviewer Rick complained of understaffing, long wait times, and under-qualified staff.

On Yelp, 13 reviews of Riverview Medical Center in general – not specifically behavioral health – averaged 3.5 out of five stars.[2] Several reviewers complimented staff. “All staff were super friendly and made me feel welcome,” Courtney wrote, which was echoed by Big S: “Never felt a group of nurses and Doctors who cared so much.”
