Part of Rochester Regional Health, a network of hospitals serving Rochester and the Finger Lakes region of Western N.Y., Unity Park Ridge Campus’ chemical dependency unit (called Unity Chemical Dependency) provides short-term inpatient and outpatient programs for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. It is one of 56 short-term residential facilities in the state of New York. Additionally, the facility offers residential programs for adolescent males up to age 21 and a gender-specific program for women.

If necessary, the Unity Park Ridge Campus facilitates ambulatory detoxification, which utilizes Suboxone to assist with opioid withdrawal and Phenobarbital (an epilepsy medication) to alleviate the symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal.

According to the facility's website, upon admission, clients participate in a substance abuse assessment, which is used to create an individualized treatment plan and determine an appropriate level of care.

If stabilization is required, patients may be referred to the 14-day inpatient program. During inpatient treatment, patients participate in a structured schedule of individual therapy, group counseling, recreational therapy. They also attend self-help groups, including 12-step meetings.

Designed for patients who may benefit from a longer program, gender-specific residential care also includes therapeutic counseling, recreational activities, and relapse prevention education. The Adolescent Community Residence for male adolescents incorporates on-site schooling, family education, and support for loved ones.

The Barbara Wolk Schwarz Women’s Community Residence focuses on repairing interpersonal relationships, determining career goals, and addressing issues of self-esteem.

Unity Chemical Dependency also provides a number of specialized outpatient programs, including programs for men, women, adolescents, young adults, older adults, and dually diagnosed individuals. All of these sessions meet multiple times per week to help clients understand the nature of addiction and their role in recovery.

The facility's website notes Unity Chemical Dependency’s interdisciplinary staff is comprised of physicians, nurses, substance abuse counselors, addiction psychiatrists, mental health therapists, recreational and vocational therapists, and social workers. To date, the four individuals polled by to date on the matter praised the aptitude of staff.

Facility Cleanliness and Upkeep: 5/5

The sole alum polled by at the time of this writing reported excellent individual and group counseling sessions. The alum, John, admitted that he did not complete the outpatient program, but he indicated that the counselors were respectful and attentive. He gave five out of five stars for the staff's level of support, treatment effectiveness, and the staff's level of training and experience.

Reviews on secondary sites were mixed. On Google, ten reviewers gave an average rating of 2.7 out of five stars.[1] "The place is so disorganized and chaotic no one in charge seems to ever truly know what's going on" wrote Zach in a comment representative of the negative reviews. On Facebook, where the facility may have the ability to manage its own page, 940 reviewers gave an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars. These however are representative of the establishment as a whole and not only the substance abuse program. [2]

With exception, the five loved ones polled by at the time of this writing mostly rated the programs at Unity Chemical Dependency well. On average, the loved ones gave an average rating higher than four stars for counseling options, family participation, and the staff's level of experience.

Only one of the three submitted a critical review — “I would not recommend this facility. It was more of a fraternity then a rehab facility,” they wrote.

Offering perfect five-star ratings for the facility's counseling options, discharge planning, and the amount of family participation, one loved one wrote: "Well trained experienced staff. Modern facility." Another loved one added: "I am happy to say my loved one is still clean five years later."

The two staff members who responded to surveys provided mixed opinions of the program. Critical of the program, one staff member compared the program to jail. Yet a former nurse felt the program was well-staffed and that clients received attentive care, offering a four-star rating for the staff's credentials and five stars for emphasizing client interest.

According to the center's website, Unity Chemical Dependency accepts private insurance, as well as New York Medicaid and Medicare. Financial assistance may be available on a case-by-case basis. The four individuals polled on the matter generallt approved of the facility's cost.

My loved one only stayed two days. Easily accessoble.

I have been an RN for many years. I was interested in caring for people dependent on drugs/alcohol. That is why I took the classes to help work with them. I recently obtained a certificate to update the training. I would love to be working in one again.

Well trained experienced staff. Modern facility. Some counselors use program top push personal ideological and religious agendas. I find that practice predatory, immoral and counter productive. Program works. For our family, the matrix of on-going support, and on-going programs (AA) for the person with this problem was more important than the program itself, It is still a worthwhile program.
