Rushford at Stonegate Philosophy

Rushford provides life-saving and life-changing treatment to thousands of children, adults and families each year. For more than three decades, our organization has been committed to delivering high quality behavioral healthcare services to those in need. We have collaborated with some of the nation's top universities including Yale, Darmouth and the University of Connecticut on research studies and other initiatives designed to improve treatment outcomes for individuals with mental health and addiction disorders.

Unlike many other addiction programs, Rushford is licensed by the State of Connecticut and accredited by the Joint Commission. To maintain our licensing and accreditation, we must always be striving to improve our performance, to raise the level of care we provide to our clients and to demonstrate accountability in the delivery of services.

Areas of Specialization

  • Residential Treatment
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

  • 12-Step
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

Set on a 43-acre campus in rural Connecticut, Rushford at Stonegate provides short- and long-term, comprehensive residential addiction treatment programs for adolescent men ages 13 to 18. Operated under the Hartford HealthCare network, Rushford’s five facilities are licensed by the State of Connecticut and accredited by the Joint Commission. Detox is not offered here.

Treatment at Rushford at Stonegate begins with an assessment by clinical staff to determine the client’s needs. Each client meets with a team of specialists to identify specific treatment needs. Once clients have been assessed, the staff can determine the appropriate treatment methods and enroll clients.

Treatment consists of gender-specific programming within an appropriate environment for recovery. Clients participate in individual and group counseling sessions. Treatment uses the 12-steps principles and The Seven Challenges. The facility also offers teens physical education, recreational opportunities, and coordinates with boys’ home schools to develop individualized tutoring plans.

Family therapy is encouraged during treatment. Clients and their families can participate in group therapy as well as other activities. Rebuilding family relationships is encouraged at every opportunity.

Rushford at Stonegate’s treatment team includes a board-certified physician, child and adolescent psychiatrists, licensed psychologists and therapists, a registered nurse, and a certified recreational therapist.

Rushford at Stonegate’s 43-acre campus houses up to 16 adolescent males in a recently renovated facility with private and semi-private rooms. Teens are encouraged to take advantage of the facility’s sporting equipment and exercise machines, soccer and baseball fields, and an adventure ropes course. Educational services are also available through a partnership with the local school district.

Currently, two loved ones have provided with feedback about Rushford at Stonegate. The feedback was positive.

One loved one surveyed offered five out of five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience and described staff as “qualified.” In addition, the loved one rated the level of family participation, holistic treatment options, and admission/discharge process four-star ratings, while affordability earned a mediocre three-star rating. They also gave strong feedback regarding the effectiveness of treatment in both the overall rating and commentary. “It was for a family member and it proved to be very successful in treating underlying problems and getting back on track,” the loved one wrote.

The other loved one, J.G., did not fill out a survey. However, the loved one wrote: “Rushford is a wonderful place with a very caring staff.”

On the facility’s unofficial Facebook page, Rushford Lake has received two positive reviews and one negative review to date. [1] However, it should be noted that two of the reviews may not be about the facility itself. One anonymous reviewer complained about the lack of mental health treatment and wrote: “there are NO mental health groups in there. The whole place revolves around recovering addicts, which is great, but it does not help in any way to the mentally disabled.”

At the time of this writing, the one anonymous staffer polled by called attention to the facility’s “reasonable rules,” but noted “expensive” treatment as a weakness.

They gave four out of five stars or higher to the facility for holistic treatment, counseling options, and staff level of experience, but rated family participation their lowest rating of three stars. “Good first step to the rest of your life,” the staff member concluded.

Rushford at Stonegate accepts most major insurance plans. The facility also offers financing options through a partnership with SerenityLoans and other nonprofits that support teens in need of treatment.
