ABOUT RUTH HOUSE

Located in Umatilla, Fla., about an hour north of Orlando, Ruth House is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that serves women struggling with substance misuse. Ruth House operates as a transitional shelter for women in crisis, providing them with residential addiction treatment rooted in Christian principles. The organization was founded in 2006 by Rebecca Randall, a minister and U.S. Air Force Veteran who has been in recovery for over 18 years.

According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 42.2 percent of rehabs in Florida are operated by a nonprofit organization. The same survey indicates that 46.4 percent of rehabs in the state offer programs specifically tailored to adult women.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Ruth House’s website, the center’s goal is to help women move on from personal crisis and re-enter society as productive and responsible individuals. The organization’s approach to treatment is research-based and includes a combination of group therapy, individual counseling, Bible study, community engagement, and 12-step participation.

The minimum stay at the Ruth House is three months, but the organization recommends a stay of six to twelve months. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 20.8 percent of rehabs in Florida offer a non-hospital, residential program that is 30 days or longer.

As the organization's website outlines, residents are required to maintain employment, attend a minimum of two AA/NA meetings weekly, attend church every Sunday, perform community service work, and work in the Kinsman Redeemer Thrift Store which supports the ministry.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Ruth House’s staff consists of a minister (who is also the center's founder, president, and executive director) and a licensed mental health counselor who is also a certified addiction specialist.

“Naomi Women,” Ruth House’s term for volunteers, provide additional guidance by offering emotional support, encouraging healthy decision making, and assisting families with day-to-day activities.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Located in a traditional, wood-frame home, Ruth House has five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and can accommodate up to 10 women at a time. The organization's website notes that the house is an updated southern cracker home with a spacious front porch and big yard.

Ruth House is also one of 16 rehabs in Florida (2.4 percent of all rehabs in the state) that allows children to stay with their mothers during treatment.
