Saint Alphonsus Health System is a Catholic, nonprofit healthcare network that operates four regional hospitals in Idaho and Oregon. The Behavioral Health Center at Saint Alphonsus, in western Boise, provides inpatient and outpatient treatment for people of all ages who are struggling with mental and behavioral health disorders. As part of the Saint Alphonsus Health System, the Behavioral Health Center is among the 9.7 percent of addiction treatment facilities in the state of Idaho that operate as private nonprofits.

Saint Alphonsus Behavioral Health's website doesn't explicitly mention services for substance use disorder, though the center does affirm that it can treat mood and anxiety disorders, trauma and abuse, and behavioral disorders, among other difficulties.

Inpatient care is offered as a short-term, emergency, and stabilization measure only; the average length of stay for adult inpatients is five to six days. All patients receive medical and psychiatric evaluations, psychosocial assessment, medication management services, education, chaplaincy services, interactive and processing therapies, and discharge planning.

Outpatient treatment for conditions ranging from mood and anxiety disorders to developmental and behavioral disorders is available only with a doctor’s referral. Clients may work with individual providers at the clinic or with integrated treatment teams. Programs use individual and group therapy as well as medication management, when necessary.

The goal of all behavioral health treatment programs at Saint Alphonsus is to help clients develop understanding and skills for coping and recovery.

Staff members include medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, licensed clinical social workers, and nurse practitioners, with areas of specialization including psychopharmacology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy. The four individuals polled by to date on the center's staff were mostly impressed.

Staff Experience and Training: 4.3/5

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, given the hospital setting, clients can likely expect a clinical environment. One staff member polled by described the setting as institutional.

The four individuals polled by to date on the physical setting were mostly impressed, though they noted that the center's extracurricular activities left room for improvement;.

Cleanliness: 4.3/5
Exercise and Leisure: 3.3/5

The single alum polled by at the time of this writing would strongly recommend the program, giving maximum five-star ratings for the program's treatment effectiveness, affordability, available counseling options, admin/discharge procedures, and treatment of co-occurring disorders.

Saint Alphonsus Behavioral Health has mostly positive feedback on secondary sites at the time of this writing, with a four-star average rating based on 18 reviews on Google.[1] There's little overlap between the few negative reviews, which variously cite disorganization, dirty conditions, misdiagnosis, and unhelpful or unprofessional staff — though none of these reports are corroborated by other comments.

The positive reviewers repeatedly praised the center's sensitive, accepting staff, and praised the quality of the food and the center's cleanliness. "I stayed here for about 6 days. Best hospital I've been to hands down. Nurses and psych techs are nice, the unit I was on (adult) wasn't loud like the other place I went to, food was awesome and they let you smoke here, which really helps me," Graydon wrote in a representative comment.

Of three reviews submitted to by former or current employees, two are positive and one is more critical. The positive reviews spoke highly of the center's caring and well-qualified treatment staff. "Caring staff who assist patients in recognizing their addicts and coping techniques taught to combat the addiction," one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review.

However, taken together, staff criticisms suggest an overstretched facility. One reviewer complained of high caseloads for social workers, while another wrote that the facility "felt institutional, not much room for personalize living areas," and the third added: "It felt as if the individual treatment was lacking. It's more of a holding facility."

All three reviewers agreed that the center's holistic offerings left room for improvement, with two two-star ratings and a three-star rating. The facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders received more polarized feedback, with a two-star rating and two five-star ratings.

The hospital offers financial support in the form of a sliding fee scale and some treatment free-of-charge for clients who can't pay (offered at 67.7 and 47.6 percent of Idaho-based facilities, respectively). Saint Alphonsus also accepts numerous insurance plans and provides help to clients in finding public resources or loans to cover payments. The four individuals polled by to date on the center's affordability were impressed.

Affordability: 4.3/5

The location of the facility is great, but it felt as if the individual treatment was lacking. It's more of a holding facility.

Felt scared and nervous beginning the treatment, but the staff made the experience much better over time.

Caring staff who assist patients in recognizing their addicts and coping techniques taught to combat the addiction. Not enough social workers, workload is heavy for them. The staff and support personnel keep this old facility maintained in a welcoming environment but drastically need a new building.

Good qualified counselors and staff. Compassionate. Fair visiting hours. However, it felt institutional, not much room for personalize living areas. Visiting rooms were also uninviting.
