ABOUT SAMARITAN VILLAGE
Located along the eastern base of the Catskill Mountains approximately 90 miles north of New York City, the picturesque Ellenville, N.Y. is home to one of the 50 Samaritan Village treatment center locations throughout the state. The nonprofit organization provides treatment and recovery services for men, women, and families struggling with substance abuse. The facility also includes specialized programming for the elderly, homeless, and veterans.
Samaritan Village, as a network offers, medically assisted detox, residential services, outpatient services, and transitional housing, however the Ellenville location serves only as a residential treatment center.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment at the Ellenville center is highly structured and uses a combination of individual counseling, group therapy, education, job preparedness training, and assistance with family reunification.
While some programs are gender-specific, the majority of Samaritan Village’s residential programming is co-ed. There is no standard duration for treatment, and length of stay is determined according to each individuals needs.
Methadone maintenance for opioid addiction may also be prescribed.
Few details regarding staff credentials are available, but all of Samaritan Village’s substance abuse treatment programs are licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. The two alumni polled on the staff's level of support both gave perfect five star ratings and another alum listed the "caring counselors" as a strength of the facility.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Accommodations are dormitory-style: rooms are shared, and each guest is given a bed, closet, and dresser. Visitation at Samaritan Village is by appointment only, and mobile phone use is permitted for participants who are working or actively engaged in a job search.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave mostly positive reviews. Treatment effectiveness received an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars based on six reviews. The three alumni polled on additional metrics such as opportunities for exercise and leisure, connectivity/visitor policy, family participation, cleanliness, affordability, and counseling options all left rave ratings of five out of five stars for each category.
Robert, a program alum polled by Rehabs.com, gave his overall experience a perfect rating and wrote: “This facility helped me to become the man, father, son and over person I am today. I was broken mentally. Samaritan Village fixed me!” Another alum, Gloria, agreed with this rating and wrote: “I was a mess and facing time in jail . Thank God for my judge and Samaritan Village who gave me the tools and the power to know that I could do this.”
Joel offered Rehabs.com a more critical review. He gave just three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and wrote: "The place is beatiful. The people are great but the staff are useless." He went on to say, "Some of the case manager treat people like garbage screaming at them and trying to get people upset when all they looking for is understanding after coming all broken from the streets."
Secondary sources reveal similar ratings and commentary, such as CiteHealth, which has an average score of 2.1 out of five stars across eight reviews. The facility fared a little better on Google, where 13 ratings appear to date with an average of 2.8 out of five stars.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
A single affiliated loved one has provided Rehabs.com with feedback for Samaritan Daytop Village - Ellenville. The anonymous reviewer gave five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, but categories such as holistic options and connectivity were given just one- and two-star ratings, respectively. While the same reviewer felt that groups were the facility's weakness, they also said they like that family was involved and noted that "Counseling was a strength of the facility."
WHAT STAFF SAY
Rehabs.com also polled a staff members who provided mostly favorable reviews. While D.W. admitted that the “size of facility” and “lack of staff training” were among Samaritan Village’s weaknesses, they also wrote: “For those looking for change in their lives they have had many stories of success through their programs. Well balanced services, clinical, vocational, psychological.”
