ABOUT SANFORD HOUSE

Located near downtown Grand Rapids, Sanford House is an upscale, residential substance abuse treatment facility exclusively for women 18 and older. Outpatient services are also available. According to the facility’s website, Sanford House, which opened in October 2014, was the state’s first private residential treatment program for women. It does not offer medical detox, but can provide recommendations and referrals to local detox centers if needed.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All clients receive a comprehensive medical and personal assessment upon admission.

Residential treatment plans are multidisciplinary, evidence-based, and personalized. Treatment includes individual and group therapy, family therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, educational classes, workshops, creative therapies (such as interactive journaling), 12-step meetings, and recreational activities. Holistic activities such as yoga, art therapy, and acupuncture are also offered, and nutrition education is a top priority. Medication management is provided. The program typically lasts 30 days.

Each day begins with a post-breakfast meditation period and ends with gratitude practice. Residents are kept busy with programming all day, with a few hours free in the afternoon for personal time and homework.

Each client works with her counselor to put together a personalized aftercare program. Some women progress to one of the facility’s outpatient programs, which includes a partial hospitalization program (PHP), an intensive program (IOP), and outpatient counseling services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes several master’s level licensed professional counselors, a physician, a registered nurse, certified addictions counselors, and licensed social workers. A wellness coach and a chef are also on staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility’s newly restored colonial-style mansion houses up to 10 residents at a time. The interior, which boasts refinished oak floors, a spacious library, a cozy living room, a full-service kitchen, and dining room, is elegant but homey.

Every resident has a roommate, and all clients share four fully renovated, spa-style bathrooms, three with walk-in showers and a half-bath. The home is close to numerous state parks and walking trails and there are weekly movie nights. Both reviewers surveyed gave five out of five stars for the facility’s accommodations.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility positive feedback, both noting its caring and experienced staff. One alum was particularly pleased with the food and living arrangements, telling Rehabs.com, “The beds are extremely comfortable, the rooms are spacious, welcoming, and homey. The place has an excellent chef and very healthy food.”

Allison, the other alum, commended the program for the “very small groups and a lot of personal attention” and gave the facility a perfect rating of five stars for its staff’s experience and level of training. However, she also rated exercise and leisure activities only two stars and counseling options three stars.

On the facility’s Facebook page, which they have the ability to manage, 13 reviewers left an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars.[1] “The staff is amazing and with all of them this place feels like home and just provides you with all The tools you need to change your life and stay strong in recovery,” Valerie wrote. And on Google, three reviewers gave perfect five-star ratings.[2]

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, some private insurance plans are accepted. Sanford House does not accept Medicare or Medicaid.

Sanford House is a very luxurious place to stay for rehab. It is beautiful. The beds are extremely comfortable, the rooms are spacious, welcoming, and homey. The place has an excellent chef and very healthy food. The staff is phenomenal. You can tell they genuinely care about each and every woman they work with and know what to offer to women. You get to attend outside support group meetings every evening, and go to the YMCA. They have a variety of types of group therapy and take your preferences into consideration for the weekly schedule for which meetings and activities to do. I would call it the platinum standard for rehabs, having seen many rehabs up close and personal. It is on par with other rehabs for affordability.
